my 955BE is set to have CNQ enabled, yet it defaults to 1.3V and 3.2Ghz on start up. The thing idles around 52C, and i want to increase the fan speed, but not voltage. In EPU4 (I have an M4A79XTD EVO) the High Performance setting does get the fan speed up, but it also increases voltage. SpeedFan doesn't work, so do I need to buy a fan controller?

you will need and fan controller as i can't think of any other way that will get the fan speed up. Also idle at 52c is high so yeah you need to cool it down asap or you risk heat damage once at full load! What CPU cooler have you got?

in the health status there is prolly a setting to disable smart fan(smart fan enabled= fan throttles depending either current voltage or temperature) or the like
when i oc i disable the smart fan setting on all of my gigabyte boards to run the cpu fan header at 100%(my 790XTA had a sys-fan smart mode too for the other 3pin headers)

thanks guys. Currently i have the stock HS/F, but i am trying to get a noctua cooler (the low profile one with 140 mm circular fan, the name escapes me right now). so that will be a big improvement, and would the NZXT Sentry 2 be a good choice?

I think you need to find out what is going on now. There is no way that your CPU should be idling that high even with the stock cooler. What are the average ambient temperatures where your chassis is located?
I believe I recommended this before, look for a BIOS update, try different monitoring applications to verify your results and maybe go as far as reseat the heatsink with new TIM.

+1...I have a 955BE running at 3.7ghz on a ASUS MA477TD and underload with prime95 I dont hit 52c...Under power settings in the bios you should have a setting(HW MONITOR CONFIGURATION)Or something similar to that(depends on what bios you have)..Enter that and disable the SMART Q-FAN FUNCTION..That way your cpu fan will run at 100% all the time..Try it and see where you temps go..
If that does not work I would pull the heatsink and fan off as Major suggested, clean the Cpu and heatsink really well and apply just a dab of thermal paste..I use Artic silver 5...The size of a grain of uncooked rice is what I try to get on the cpu..Reseat the stock cooler making sure it is totally tighened down to the motherboard...Your temps should fall...If they still dont drop then take ambient room temp into consideration and also like Major suggested try a Bios update....

Well, it runs at around 47.2C with 1.3V and 3.2 GHz, so I guess Q-Fan was to blame. Thanks man!

Is this at load or idle?

well, right after a two-hour long gaming session of Borderlands (16x AA, no dynamic shadows, 1680x1050) my temps were hovering around 50 degrees, so it must have worked. and i did some cable management.
