BANGKOK, Thailand (Reuters) -- Japan's Hitachi Ltd, facing pent-up demand for the popular iPod digital music player from AppleComputer Inc., said it would spend about $200 million to double disk drive output at its Thailand plant.

Japan's largest electronics conglomerate said the extra production, including the 1-inch, 4-gigabyte disk drives used in iPods, would cut the six-week waiting time for the digital music players by the end of this year.

I can't believe that people are waiting for six weeks for an iPod! People should take a look at iRiver and other companies. You get more features, spend less money, and the replacement batteries won't break the bank!

But you won't get AAC playback - for some people, mostly audiophiles, this is what's ipod's all about.

AAC, in an MP4 container could easily be the "mp3 of the future", but not so many players support this format, and almost none support the container. (ipod's .m4a is only a renamed .mp4, and .m4p is .mp4 with DRM, AFAIK)
