Screen freezes and it stalls!

Post by Guru »

Hey guys,

I have a problem with my computer. Need some help in finding out the problem. It started happening today.

What it did was I started Bad Company 2 and got to the login screen and my entire screen froze and the colors started fading out. After a minute, it gave me a blue screen. It restarted it self and it was fine until, I tried starting the game again and it froze again.

It was fine for an hour and i was browsing and screen froze again and colors started fading out. It didn't give me the blue screen right away but the my monitor said "Entering power saver mode" It acted like I turned off the computer but the computer was ON, only the screen was off. At this point, I think it's the graphic card over heating so, i checked the temperature and it's fine, it's sitting at 62C or 63C.

I took the graphic card out and cleaned the dust a bit. Fired it up and same thing. It restarted it self and got to the login screen and screen froze but the computer is ON. Didn't give me the blue screen right away.

I restarted again and upgraded the driver to the latest driver. It worked fine for couple hours until, i started xfire and steam and screen froze again and blue screen :( . So, it keeps on happening.

What I'm guessing is that it might be my Graphic card which might be dying or mother board. I haven't made any hardware or software changes at all. OH....my computer specs.

Processor:Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6700 (8M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Memory: DDR2 4GB Corsair XMS2 and 2GB Kingston Value RAM = 6GB at 800Mhz
Hard Drive: WD VelociRaptor 150GB, Cavier Green 1TB & WD Black 500GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ OC version
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Motherboard: Intel D975XBX2

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance. :) :(

I would either downclock it to original chip speeds(not the stock factory OC speed)...If that fails still and if you have another video card handy, try that to see if that one works. If it does, the 9800 might be gone. if both cards don't work..the motherboard may be the issue.

I might even say try running Memtest(or something similar) on each stick of ram you have just to make sure those aren't the culprit as well.

I haven't OC'd my card at all. It came OC'd this 9800 GTX is OC'd version of BFX i think. I left the computer ON overnight and it was still ON when I woke up this morning.

Edit: After posting the message, i started the game and played good for 10 minutes and screen froze, color faded out and monitor is entering power saver mode. It gave me blue screen and restarted it self and just about it said, starting windows, screen froze again, color faded out and blue screen. Restarted itself and it running now. :(

Ok so another update...It keeps on doing it to so, i decided to take the graphic card out and use the motherboard internal graphic. But I don't have the cable to hook it up :( .. Before i put the graphic card back in, i took out 2 single kingston ram out and kept the 4GB dual ram in it. I fired it up and i got a nVidia message saying, "My graphic card isn't getting enough power hence, lowering the performance on it".

What do you guys think?

I think it's power supply now but if it was power supply then, it wouldn't work at all ryt?

Give me some ideas here, i'm clueless, i'm ready to build a new computer.

does the card require additional power source? ie 6pin PCIe power cable or 4pin cable

the oldest radeon i've ever used is an 850XT which does have a power connector

wow wrong thread 9800GTX+ not 9800Pro ](*,)

It has 2 four-pin power cable connected. It looks like this

It's the 2nd one at the top.

This is the GPU

What power supply are you using? It is possable that it is the PSU, if you were using one that doesn't have the 26 amp rating you may have been placing extra stress on it and it may be failing/failed.

Send the card back NOW. BFG is on the way out and that means no more warranty.

it might be GPU now or PSU cuz when i took out the GPU out i didn't insert the PSU wires proper. But now everything is plugged in now but the GPU's fan is going really loud.

So GPU gone bad right? How do I RMA the card? Never done it before and this card is 3yrs old.

I don't know if the card is the culprit or not but RMA it before BFG doesn't honor the warranty.
