GTX 460 1gb vs. GTX 465

Post by VanBoHawa141 »

my system specs: HP
Windows Vista SP2 4gb RAM
PSU 680w
GPU ATI 5830
cpu intel core 2 quad 2.66 ghz
monitor is LG 21.5" hd 1080p max resolution 1900x1080
i am thinking about getting either a 460 or 465 but want to know which is better in terms of performance and heating (idle/load)

thanks

additional info: i've also been doing a lil research on other forums and found out a majority of people prefer the 460 to 465 even though 465 has a higher number in stats that is but i would still appreciate if anyone here would offer their own opinion
thanks again

Why do you want to change your 5830? The little extra performance isn't really worth the investment, at least from my point of view. :-k

unless you can sell it for at least 85% of retail value i'd also keep the 5830. otherwise you're talking about spending $430 for an upper-midrange card

Yeah its really not that great of a step up. Money might be better spent else where, maybe double your ram or get a 60gb SSD and Windows 7.

As Nate said the 460 all the way. Here's my question(s) though. Why do you feel like you need to upgrade? What CPU and monitor do you have? If you're gaming on a 19" widescreen @ 1440x900 then you wouldn't be getting any tangible return.

Might see some benefit from going to the GTX 460. What spurred this decision on? Game not playing like it should or is money burning a hole in your pocket?

I'd say that's enough reason to get the 460.

Personally I feel more horsepower(cuda cores, memory) will be more worth it for the 465 even if it is down the road a little bit. But reviews say the 460 is just as good if not better. If you're tight on money then the 460. If money is indeed burning a hole in the pocket, then get a 460 and an SSD :P

yes the game is not running well sometimes. I am actually going to get a new psu and/or maybe upgrading my RAM from 4 to 8 gb ddr2.

To be honest i am sick of ATI and want to switch back to Nvidia as soon as i'm able to.

i use to have a 9800 gt 512mb it was not good enough so i switched to AMD cards. I was fascinated a year ago wit there new 5000 series cards because of dx11 support.

FYI i knew at that time that ATI cards sucked due to their poor drivers (which i still do BTW) but i didn't know any better.

Go for it then, you should see some improvement and I agree with your assessment of ATi and nVidia drivers.
