Power Surge/Ethernet cable question

Post by InspectahACE »

Hey guys,

Can a power surge take out Ethernet cables??..Two nights ago I was playing GTA and all of a sudden I get disconnected from the net for maybe 20 seconds. It also happened to my Mom's rig too. Only issue is, she can no longer get online and I've tried EVERYTHING imaginable to get it working without buying a new cable. Windows(7) says the ethernet cable is either unplugged or damaged, and I know it's plugged in on both ends after reseating them and nothing is sitting on or touching the cable itself. This happened to my rig before and a new cable fixed it, but I wouldn't like having to buy another cable unless I have to.

I'm not sure about cables but I know for sure it can take out modems, etc. I'm actually surprised you don't have extra cat5e/cat6 cables lying around. I've got bunch of patch cables of various lengths (bought from Monoprice) on-hand in case I ever need to do some re-wiring.

Can you plug a different rig into that cable, or her rig into a different cable? That would help determine if it is the cable or something else

I had an extra one that was long enough to go to her room from the router(which is in my room) but the Chihuahua found it and had lunch with it.

Anyhow, I think the router needed either a hard reset or just me switching ports because now she has internet. I tried the cable on my rig as you suggested Stollie, and it worked on my rig so that pointed to the router. Thanks for the suggestion.
