PC Turns on then shuts off

Post by DeusEx »

Hey guys,

My desktop computer is showing strange problems. I turn it on, it turns on, the cpu fan spins and all seems well. I cant see anything on the monitor though... Monitor displays nothing.

What could be the problem?

is this a new computer? does it post? when i was having similar problems, switching memory positions would fix it temporarily.

its not a new computer. I have had it for over a year.

What do you mean by post? The monitor displays only 1 thing: that it is entering power saving mode. Thats it. Nothing at all coming from the computer.... Till it shuts off.

A few tings come up in my mind

Could be a power supply issue, could even be a RAM, GPU or CPU issue.

I'd even try resetting the BIOS to default settings to see if that works first before digging into it.

post stands for power on self test. its your computer checking to make sure everything is ok to run, or something like that. it's signified by a single beep noise, if it does anything other then a single beep something is wrong. you can check your psu with a voltmeter or take it to a computer store to test it. you can try clearing cmos. you can try switching your ram around. you can also try plugging your computer and monitor into different power sockets.

What kind of GPU would be compatible with my build? The monitor has a white connector so I assume its a DVI. I dont know what GPU to buy I have a 9800 GT and it connects with a white cable. The blue cable, for whatever reason, doesn't work. Also the cpu fan is busted what size should I buy from new egg? I would need a cheap card to replace the one I have preferably from ATI . Its a family computer from dell here are it's specs:

you deff should have made a new thread :?

but get any 5xxx Radeon or 6850/6870 if you have more money, every card made in the past ~5 years has had at least one DVI port on it
