Don't know what to look for!!

Post by Guru » Thu Nov 25, 2010 2:20 pm

Hi guys,

To complete my build, I need Motherboard, CPU & RAM.

My friend told me to hold off because new chipset and cpu coming out in few months?

In any case, I soon will be buying 3 things to complete my build. I am not sure what to look for, as I want it extreme stuff but it gets too pricey.

Brand: I prefer EVGA, Gigabyte, ASUS or whatever is good out there.

I'll be using this for gaming and video encoding (Ripping movies) so, it has to be powerful.

My budget, I don't know yet!!

Things I already have:
Case: Coolermaster Haf X
PSU: Coolermaster 850watts
HDD: already have Raptor 150GB (going to stick to this for little bit and will get SSD after price goes down)
Video Card: Currently have GTX 460 1GB SuperClocked but just did Step-up to GTX 580 (on a waiting line 970 something, it'll be a while before I get it)

Should i wait to get these stuff or get it now?

Thank you in advance.

Do you plan on running in SLI? Do you have a preference in AMD or Intel? If AMD then SLI is probably out of the question. He was probably referring to the Sandy Bridge and P67 chipsets coming out in January. I know AMD has a new die coming out next year but I don't know when.

P67 ASUS Boards:

I prefer Intel and yes, I will do SLI but do you think I really need SLI with GTX 580?

SLI isn't an option with AMD anymore. That's why I asked that. From what I can gather here's what I would do...
A) Get an i7 (1366 not the 1156) build. Intel plans on continuing support for the foreseeable future.
B) If you are planning on getting an i7/i5/i3 (socket 1156) then wait and see how Sandy Bridge plays out. From what I know Sandy Bridge is going to be phasing out the socket 1156 so it's a deadend upgrade path.

Thanks Major.

is core-i8 or similar coming out soon? I can't seem to find but I read somewhere over the summer that core-i8 is coming out early next year.

This is all I know about Sandy Bridge. Someone else might be able to chime in with more info.

What is the $300 difference?

Code: Select all

RAM is coming down in price and is only going to be getting cheaper, finally.

On that front it seems like the more the merrier.

I haven't used an ASUS in a while but from what I've read it's a solid board. Which model are you looking at though? Any board you get make sure it has USB 3.0 and SATA III. I think most of the newer X58 boards already have this implemented but just keep an eye out.

core-i7 950 is 4 cores and core-i7 960 is 6 cores.

I think it'd be better to get 950 than 960 because there isn't anything that will use 6 cores!!

According to Newegg the i7-960 is a quad core. So again, what's the $300 difference. Unless otherwise noted skip the 960 and use the saved money to get a boot drive SSD.

960 is 4C 8T
950 is 4C 8T

no reason whatsoever to opt for the 960, only difference i can spot is the frequency. same memory, TDP, QPI etc.

an i7 is an i7, either way it is a LOT of procession power, just get whatever one you can afford. just remember: i7 9xx=LGA 1366, i7 8xx=LGA 1156 motherboard

They are different sockets.
950 is a 1366 board that uses triple channel memory.
2600K is an 1155 board that uses dual channel memory.

The 950 doesn't not have video in the chip. The 2600K does have built in video.

From what I've read the 1366 socket is still considered the enthusiast line. But given what I've seen in the overclocking sections of the Sandy Bridge reviews it isn't a slouch either.

Overall the Sandy Bridge build will cost you less and the socket is new so it shouldn't be phased out in the near future.

My $.02.

I would definitely opt for 2600k, not only is it faster than regular 920-960 but you have a practically guaranteed 4.5+GHz on air as well
