Windows 7 network transfers super slow

Post by KnightRid »

Ok, I have tried everything i found on the internet, disabling superfetch, RDC ( i think that is the letters), both of the netsh commands and nothing has increased my wired network speed much above 1mb/sec

I have a gigabit network card on this system, a gigabit router and a gigabit switch - basically everything is gigabit. Also I am running Windows 7.

I am so frustrated at this! I know on my main system I do not get much above 20-30mb/sec but that would even be a major improvement. I do not know why Windows is so hard ot get netowrking working correctly at the speeds I should be getting.

Any help will be appreciated!

What kind of speeds are you seeing?

*EDIT*
Just saw your speeds. From my experience that's about the norm. I'm running a wired gigabit switch with CAT 6 cables. Transferring to my HTPC yields about 20-30MB/s. Copying from my HTPC (same drive) gets me about 60-90MB/s. I think it has to do more with the drives and the read/write activity than with the network.

*EDIT 2*
Seems like I ran this app before to benchmark my network speed. I see now that they want money so I don't know if you can use it or not. Worth a shot though.

Those speeds are from this computer upstairs on my laptop I am getting around 1mb/sec NOT 20-30. I would be happy with 20-30 even though it should be faster.

I may try linux later on and see if the speeds are faster. I still think there has been a bug in Windows 7 that causes this because there are WAY too many reports of the exact same thing happening to people all over the world for it to be driver issues or configuration issues.

So you are talking about wireless speeds then? Before an update for both Vista and Windows 7 it would calculate how long it would take to transfer then start. With the update it works like XP and starts transferring the files, then calculates how long it will take. All the computers up to date according to Windows Update?

If it is a wired connection things to try:
1) Update client drivers.
2) Update router firmware.
3) Try different cable(s).

wired and I have the latest drivers, latest firmware and I tried 4 different cables so far.

I am at my wits end. It should not be this hard to get wired networking to work up to speed.

That is ridiculous

Something else to consider...
When transferring files it is always better to have one big file than a folder with a bunch of files. If I'm transferring anything over 500MB I'll WinRAR it as storage and send it that way.

What is the current hardware you're using? NICs, router and switch? Unless you are making a long run with a couple connections (i.e. wall plate adapters) it shouldn't be that low. What about CPU utilization when you are transferring large files? When I'm bringing a TV recording to my computer from my HTPC to edit I've seen it get as high as 20%.

One more question/comment. What are the specs of the two computers you are swapping files? If either one of them is antiquated/slow then it slows down the whole process.

Sorry about your troubles. I know this won't make you feel any better but I can send files from this PC (wireless n USB adapter) to my main rig at 6MB/s. If you can't get it sorted out you might be better off trying wireless.

EDIT
Here is me copying the same file to and from my HTPC. I can only assume that it comes in faster because this is a beefier PC than the HTPC.

I had to get the wire to run downstairs because I can not keep a wireless signal. I don't know if it is because we have the old radiator heating with pipes running everywhere or not, but the signal from my D-Link DIR-655 will not reach upstairs to the other end of the house nor downstairs to the other end of the house. We are talking no more than 50 feet also.

Oh the switch is a D-Link gigabit also - cant remember the model numbers off hand

Computers - laptop is the new Core i7 I just bought with a broadcom card in it (Dell Studio XPS). This main computer is a Q6700 with an Atheros built on the motherboard.

I have tried 1 large file and many smaller files and I still get around the 1mb/sec speed

Speed I am getting from my main system Q6700 to my Core i7-920 folding computer -

So I know the main system can send fast, it seems something with the laptop is causing the problems. Both systems run Windows 7, so I dunno. I still have not tried Linux on the laptop to see if it is faster. I dont know if I can see my windows 7 shared folder inside linux or not. I will try soon.

just to update (yea, old thread :p). I never got the speeds any better and now from my main system to the i7 I am now getting 11mb/sec

I absolutely hate transferring files through a network using windows!

Does anyone have a real fix for this? All of my drivers are updated and RDC is off on all computers.

everything on my network is 1gbps including the router (dir-655 till I can buy an Aus rt-n56u), switch and all network cards in computers.

Oh and I have tried with large files and small files with no gain in speed what-so-ever.

ok, DUH - forgot to use the netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled command on the vista machine so it set everything back to windows default. used that and disabled the rss and autotuning and it seems to have worked.

Sending to RAID array is now in the 20ish mb/s and to the main drive was over 50 mb/s

Why oh why cant windows make this stuff simple *sigh*
