CPU/mobo for $400 recommendation

Post by pcrobot »

So I am looking to upgrade my desktop with a new CPU and motherboard. I want to start off the new year with a fresh install of Windows and a little speed boost. I currently have an AMD X2 5200+ in the Abit Fatal1ty motherboard.

I have about $400 for the upgrade. I use my desktop for homework, light gaming and some music production from time to time. This is a Windows 7 machine BTW. I've not kept up on the latest hardware news so I feel like a noob figuring this all out.

Below are the following parts I'm thinking about buying.

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz

MSI 890GXM-G65

CORSAIR XMS3 4GB

I'd like some solid parts so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

To be honest man, I'd just get a faster AM3 quad-core that's faster than a similarly priced X6 chip. Unless you're a video editor you'll probably be happier with a 3.5GHz Phenom II X4 970 for $6 more than the X6 at 2.8 GHz.

Also, just my 2 cents but I would prefer the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 board myself, but that's just me being nitpicky, either board will be great!
Cyberpower generic case
B450M PRO-VDH MAX
Ryzen 5 3600 w/PBO/OC
CM Hyper 212 EVO push/pull
Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3600 CL16
MSI RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 3X 8G OC LHR
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB
6GB Seagate HDD
EVGA 650BQ 650W PSU
ASUS VE278 27" monitor, Dell E2216HV (vertical)
Logitech Z533 2.1 Speakers, G935 7.1 or G435 headset
MS LXM-00001 keyboard
Razer Deathadder Elite, XBOX One Lunar Shift controller

I've come a long way from my original Core2Duo E6750 build y'all! :supz:

I got an email from microcenter about the new i CPU's and was showing the price of a 2500k to be 179.99. I don't know if it was a typo but if it's true I'm upgrading. The link doesnt not take me to that page anymore so it might have been a typo.

Here's my picks: newegg combo deal: cpu and motherboard less than 400 dollars. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.580754 I know the 1156 socket is dead but still it's under four hundred dollars :)
