Comcast to offer Net phone service

Post by Apoptosis » Thu May 27, 2004 6:24 am

Cable company Comcast plans aggressive roll out of VOIP service

NEW YORK - Comcast Corp. said Wednesday it will offer Internet-based telephone service to more than 40 million households by 2006, as it follows a host of other cable operators challenging local telephone companies.
VOIP sounds like a good thing, but a simple virus could wipe out the lines in an emergency situation! I'm not sure with all the terriost threats that it's a good idea right now.

As the cable companies improve the infrastructure it has become less and less vulnerable to that type of attack. While all the people in your area are on essentail one cable the surrounding areas are all independent nodes linked with highspeed fiber optics to the main hubs at the cable co.'s hq. This makes it very hard to take down the whole system. Unles they decide to use windows. :)

This sounds like an awesome idea. I wish they would offer a deal to existing cable customers.

That's one reason to maintain a landline along with your broadband/VoIP link.
among the others are power failure, service failure, device failure, and of course competitive cost. (if the cable co "owns" the neighborhood, do you think the cost will be low.?)
cable is rarely UPS equipped, after /during a diaster/emergency cel towers/phones, cable will ferquently be overloaded/unavailable.
You can request minimal service, (ie no long distance, no features, and and use it as and inbound/emergency oly line, use the VoIP as outbound and long distance line
