FX-4100 or G840 for non gaming Photoshop type rig

My system is about 4 years old (except for the ssd boot drive) and I would like to upgrade a bit. I don't game at all and the most intensive thing I use is Photoshop and video editing on Vegas. Which would be a better system cpu- amd's FX-4100 or intel's G840? Or is an i3 worth the extra $50?

I would spend the extra $50 to go with the core i3. Spending the extra $50 gets you Hyperthreading which should help a bit in Vegas and Quick Sync which really helps in encoding. Really the only the G840 has going for it is lower power consumption. I would avoid the FX-4100 (and I'm typically an AMD guy). The Bulldozers usually perform worse than the Phenom II's in a lot of non-gaming benchmarks.

Thanks for the comments. I knew about the hyperthreading in i3, but not Quick Sync. Already read the review of the FX-4100 here but was curious because some of the specs look so awesome and some say it outperforms its benchmarks. But would probably be happier with an i3 for the same price.

my current system is a Gigabyte P35 mobo with an E6300 oc'd to 3.6GHz, 2GB PC26400 ram (which is what slows me down), Intel 320 80GB ssd, WD 640GB black caviar and NVidia GT430 vid card. I'm looking to replace the mobo, cpu and RAM. Mine have been pretty solid and show no signs of failing so I'm in no rush, but I can feel a new build coming on. Will likely team an i3 with a Z68 board. I am using W7 32 bit and will likely stay with that unless there's a way to transfer it to 64 bit for free, but I don't think so.

Definitely go with the i3 processors. The AMD processor is a gaming processor and Intel has always had higher performance with productivity applications. Of course it is going to cost you a bit more but the time savings will be well worth the cost.
