Merry Christmas, everyone! Best wishes from the Gold family of Sloan, NY, for a safe and happy holiday season to everyone LR! Y'all have always been such a great help to me in my various IT misadventures and I again just want to express my deepest gratitude to all of you! Wish I could send all of you some of my wife's homemade brandy-soaked chocolate covered cherries or rum cake or her first attempt at my mom's 70 year-old rum-soaked fruitcake recipe (which is phenomenal and makes me feel like I'm back home!). Fruitcake is widely maligned, I know. My mom's has always been the only one I could eat. Karen did an amazing job of replicating it now that my mom has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Mom doesn't remember a lot of her Christmas recipes now and it's just as well that, at 88, she's not in the kitchen. Her last culinary endeavor was putting whatever she was trying to warm up in an iron skillet then trying to fit it in the microwave. My brother caught her in time. I talked to her the other day and she sounded good. She knew who I was and we talked for a couple of hours. She's in good hands.

Anyway, does anyone know how to reset a Hanns-G monitor. My old 19" has not worked right since I loaned it to Karen's uncle. The screen jitters and flashes when it's not just two horizontal lines. It's incredibly irritating. It's either that or disconnect my monitor on my desk.

I had a Hanns G 28inch that started flickering at times, then sometimes I'd turn it on on and it'd be just a few lines across the screen, then a few months after that it just had a white screen.

Your problem sounds similar to what I experienced, and I am afraid there is no easy fix for it. You could try to get it repaired on warranty; I couldn't as I was off warranty by a month!, but if they don't cover shipping costs it may not be that much more expensive to just replace the 19inch.

Merry Christmas to you as well. Hopefully you aren't snowed in. We deal with 110 degree August days for mild winters. Definately a tradeoff I'll take, I can't handle the cold.

Are you running it RGB or DVI? If it's RGB I'd assume you have tried the Auto Adjustment. If you're running DVI and have a spare RGB cable handy give the Auto Adjustment a try.

One other thing to try. Unplug the monitor from the wall. Hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds. Wait a few minutes and plug it back in. For whatever reason some equipment is sensitive going from one power to the other. What you are doing here is basically draining any residual electricity that is stored in the capacitors.

If it's the monitor you can pick up parts cheap on eBay. Recently my brother in laws monitor decided to stop working. A quick Google search yielded the probable culprit, fried circuit board. I opened it up and sure enough it was toast. I Googled the part number on the PCB and ended up getting a replacement off of eBay for $20. Installed the new board and it's back up and rocking away. Hope you get it fixed and it isn't bad.

OK, sorry I didn't get back sooner. Got a liter of Johnny Walker Black for Christmas. Need I say more? Or something like that anyway ....

Here's the fruitcake recipe:
Pour 0.25 c brandy/whiskey/rum/wine (your choice) over:
1.5 c seedless regular raisins
1.5 c golden raisins
1.0 c currants (Mom always had trouble finding these but she lives in a mostly rural area. Karen found them at the meat market here in the village. Should be no problem if you live near a medium-sized city)
Allow to stand overnight

Cut into small pieces:
0.5# Candied Orange Peel
0.25# Candied Lemon Peel
0.5# Candied Pineapple (both red & green)
0.25# Candied Cherries (both red & green)
0.25# Candied Citron (similar to candied watermelon rind) *This is kind of hard to find and, because of its consistency, Karen and I decided it can be left out*
0.5# Dates (Pitted)

2.0 c Chopped Pecans or Walnuts *I grew up with 5 bearing pecan trees so it was always pecans. Nut prices this year are out of control. Karen found at one of the local candy maker supply stores 5# chopped pecans for $5.99! If you have such a store where you live, check them out first. You might save some money.*

Sift 0.5 c flour (all purpose-bleached or unbleached) over all nuts, candied fruits & fruits (after soaking in your liquor of choice). Mix well

Sift well:
1.5 c plain flour
0.5 t Cinnamon
0.5 t Mace
0.5 t Nutmeg
0.5 t Cloves
0.5 t Allspice
0.5 t Salt
0.5 t Baking Soda
Mix all well

Cream 0.25# butter or margarine
Add 1.0 c Brown Sugar & 1.0 c Regular Sugar
Beat 6 eggs & add to Butter/Sugar mixture
Stir in 0.25 c Orange Juice
Mix well
Add to fruit & nut mixture-stir with spoon until mixed well

Preheat oven to 275°
Line a tube pan with waxed paper, grease well
Pour in batter
Bake for 3-3.5 hours or until tester comes out clean
Pour 1.0 c liquor of choice over hot cake immediately

Mom Gold always used Mogan David Blackberry wine. She would age the cake for up to 6 weeks, pouring 0.5 c of wine over it once a week.

Variations on a Theme
Karen used a variety of pans with one recipe:
2.5"x5.0" (I think) aluminum loaf pans; 1.5"x3.0" (I think) Teflon mini loaf pans; mini Bundt cake pan. Yield, respectively, 4; 5 or 6; 6. *Hey, it was 2:30 am and we were pouring rum on a bunch of fruitcakes and immediately devouring one. Between inhaling alcohol-filled steam, eating blistering hot cake drenched in alcohol after having eaten another rum-soaked rum cake, I was lucky I even made it to bed!!

By using smaller pans, bake time is significantly reduced!!

Thanks to y'all both for the info. I'm afraid the monitor may be going the way of yours, Sttm. I can't say this very loudly but I had a feeling my mother-in-law's brother FUBAR'd it when I loaned it to him. It was working perfectly fine and he is a tech from way back plus he's always building a box or repairing one for either his neighbors, their friends or his relatives/in-laws so I didn't think anything about letting him take it.

He brought it back and since Fran (mother-in-law) had completely lost interest in the computer by then, I didn't bother re-connecting it until a few months later when I needed to print some photos from that drive. That's when I first got the lines. I forget exactly what I did but somehow I got a screen, albeit a jittery one. Then I tried powering it off, holding down a button and powering it back on....next button... Didn't seem to make any difference. Tried holding down the "Menu" & "Auto-adjust" buttons simultaneously and powering it on and, lo and behold, I had a spectacular-well a decent- desktop!

FF two days later. About this time of night, I connected another PC to the monitor (or vice versa if you want to nitpick--I took my sleepy, cubby-wubby-womb-room pill a couple of hours ago! anybody catch the Mike Myers reference there?). The screen was displaying a boot error because the boot disk was disconnected for some strange reason. Karen came through and made a comment about the PC being on while my back was to it. Being my perfect DA self, I went to bed shortly thereafter, leaving both PC and monitor on.

Next day, could not get a DOS prompt, boot error, or anything else. Lightly whacked the side and up came the screen. A few seconds later, jitter-jitter-go dark-jitter-jitter. Smacking it around didn't help any. Holding down buttons and powering it on didn't work either. If I ever get some free time, maybe I can take it apart and test my multi-meter skills for a couple of hours.

Oh, yeah! Major_A, as you probably already know, I wound up in Buffalo as a result of my wife being from here and caregiving for her parents. Coming here from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, I know exactly what you mean about the 100°+ days. I still tell people, "I'll take -10° over 110° any day of the week!" Interestingly, up to now we have had a total of 3" of snow. North Mississippi had that much in one day! We're down some 48-50" on the season. Snow's predicted from late tomorrow thru Friday but only 2-3" where we are then temps are back into the high-30s/low-40s. Sure am glad that "globital warmer hully-gully hogwarsh" doesn't exist!

We'll probably get buried come January!

Yeah it sounds pretty FUBAR. The guy you loaned it to sounds like some "mechanics" I know. They'll diagnose the problem correctly, then completely disassemble the transmission and not know how to fix it or even put it back together. If you take it apart look for burned spots. It was pretty obvious with the one I had to fix.
