No network connectivity after freeze-up

Post by unfaithfulsfan »

A friend of mine has had something happen that I've never seen before. A few months back, he brought his self-built desktop over and we installed Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit on it. He was happy and it was working fine. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the first spec of that PC. I'm pretty sure it's an Intel Quad Core but I do not remember the mobo manufacturer.

Anyway, he said it has frozen on him a couple of times since the new OS but it did that with XP so it hasn't been a major thing until this. It froze and, as usual, he reset it to get back to work. Since the reboot, he cannot connect to the internet. PING doesn't work, release/renew the IP doesn't work, rebooting hasn't worked. He hasn't checked CMOS so I don't know if anything in there got garbled.

He can connect his laptop at the same station with no problem. He said he has talked to every PC guy he knows, several of whom are in network support, and they're all as mystified as I. I'm wondering if he blew out that part of his board? I suggested he try a PCI network card to see if that's a possibility. Haven't heard back today. He also told me in desperation he tried the Network Troubleshooter in Windows which returned "No Valid IP Configuration Available"

He emailed me the results of ipconfig on both his laptop and his desktop. They are copied below. The most obvious thing there is no DNS Server or Default Gateway on the desktop and a weird return on the DNS Server. I Googled that but that turned out to be a router issue. Sorry for the lack of detail, I'm really not feeling well these days. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Jack

How's it going! You need to drop by more often

First is the LAN light coming on? You should see a green link light on the network card/

Goto start / run and type "services.msc"
Goto DHCP Client and r-click and select restart
If this doesn't help, goto start / programs and the accesories. R-click on command prompt and select "run as administrator"
at the prompt type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" then type "netsh dump"

Reboot and test

First command restarts the dhcp client, this could be fubar
Second 2x reset's the TCP/IP stack
Its just "jiggling the handle" but sounds like windows is just confused and needs a push in the right direction

Thanks! I just heard from him that he had left it powered down for the last couple of days because he hasn't had time to deal with it. When he booted up, everything is fine?!?!? I'll send him your solution (& keep a copy for myself for future reference!)

Thanks a ton!!
Jack
