Plastic Sheet Covering PSU Fan?

Post by DJ Tucker »

Hello everyone. Hope you all having a good week. So my question is this. Why does my PSU have a have a sheet of plastic covering the fan? In fact, it's covering 2/3rd's of the fan. i think it maybe to direct airflow so i've been told but wouldn't that reduce the air by blocking over half the fan? Anyone know it's true meaning?

I've seen that before, and when I've asked that question all I ever get is that it helps to direct the airflow and help the airflow in the power supply.

yes, it is there to direct the airflow where it is needed. Corsair has been doing it for 6+ years with great success.

it is covering 2/3rd's of the fan so how can it direct airflow around psu better if it's just being directed out the back vent? well one things for sure, my psu fan doesn't spin up anymore. even at full load the fan don't move. so i blocked the vent just to see if i could getting the temps to rise enough for the fan to kick in and it did. but the heat coming from the top of the psu before the fan turns on is somewhat warm. the temp of the componants must be quite hot?

It does it by allowing the air only one direction to enter the power supply, when the air goes in one place, it has to move to allow for more air to come in; forced convection I believe it would be.

would removing the plastic sheet do any harm to the psu?

Any harm? Highly doubtful, the fan will still spin and continue to cool the PSU. When the fan kicks in, it might take longer for the PSU to cool down, but it won't do any harm.
