The sound from my pc speakers and headset sounds horrible. When opening up a song it starts out ok, but then immediately starts to degrade and then sounds like I'm listening to it in a tunnel. The music is loud, but the voice is so low that you can barely hear it. I did not change any settings prior to this. I'm using the onboard sound integrated into my Abit AV8 mobo, which is the Realtek AC97 audio. I had no previous issues whatsoever. It's almost as if there is some sort of sound effect running in the background that I cannot locate.
I appreciate your assistance.

I just dl'ed the latest AC97 driver/codecs to see if that would correct my problem. The only thing that I installed here as of late was a DIVX player to watch a movie a friend gave me, but I've unistalled that to see if the problem would go away. I updated my winamp player a few days ago. Is it possible my problems lies there?
DIVX installs video codecs, might also install audio codecs, I'm not sure. Look for anything suspicous in Add/Remove Software. As for codecs, I recommend downloading Defiler Pak, it has all the codecs you need and they work well for me. Also, WinAmp doesn't install anything that could ruin your audio settings, so uninstalling it won't do anything.

i would also add to that, to get a registry cleaner so settings in the registry that could have been changed by the codec install would be cleared.
DivX codec packs most certainly can change ausio settings. while watching a movie in the DivX app, right click on the movie screen and you'll see a few audio mixers in there. those could be the culprit.
but just uninstalling the divx player could still keep the audio settings that got changed.
one thing that would most likely cure your problems is to do a system restore from when the audio was fine. then instal the 101Codec pack. thats what i use and it doesn't mess with my onboard audio at all.
if need be i can even host it on my FTP for you to DL if warranted.

i would get a trial reg cleaner that is rated high up and do a registry clean first.
then if that doesn't help, you could try installing my 101Codec pack as it has four different miser board in it and is much more robust that just a DivX app download.

check audio settings and turn 3D audio thingy off - I have some MB's that have that on them, and it screws up ALOT for me.
if you dont have that - then ignore this message and just FOLD - cause folding needs no audio to run ;)

Remember, I am opinionated and nothing I say or do reflects on anyone or anything else but me

The reg cleaner worked, although I had to reinstall one program and kill a couple that I never used as it removed some shared dll's and caused windows to slightly freak out. I just took note of the programs it was listing and made the corrections. I did create one small problem though. I removed a component of a program that I had dl'ed called Blaze Media and now I cannot kill it from my Program Listing under Control Panel. Probably a registry somewhere...maybe.
Thanks TGM! That's twice you've hooked me up!

glad to help
the program you have stuck in the add/remove and can't uninstall ro have it work; it can't be manually removed.
there's a free program called regclean that will allow you to manually remove the entry in the add/remove panel and then you can scan for the program name and delete what you've found.
then do a system search for the name of the app and delete anything found.
then re-install the app.
ifyou'd like i could host this free program on my FTP. i use it religiously and it's never removed anythingthat has effected programs that i wanted to keep.
