Hey everyone. My first post on Legit Reviews. I've been frequenting the site a bit in the past few days. Well anyway on to my question. I purchased an MSI GeForce FX 5900XT about 8 months ago. At the time I did my research and it seemed like an awesome buy. Now a few months back I was looking into a video card for a friend of mine. I found the Geforce 6600GT. It was moderately priced and so I put the order through. When she got it I was blown away by how much better it performed then mine. BTW we have the same CPU and amount of RAM. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone knew if these 2 cards are really that much different. I spent around $190 on mine and she spent $140 on hers. Well that's it.

The GeForce 6 series is based off a newer core and most have newer types of memory (GDDR3) on them versus the FX series that you bought for yourself. It's fairly common these days to see a cheaper card come out that will perform as good or better than the more expensive one you bought just months before.

A really amazing card today is the 7600GT Our review of the XFX GeForce 7600 GT XXX showed awesome performance in a card that was priced at $209 + shipping.

A couple months later that $209 card can be bought for $159.99 after a $30 rebate (link) That XFX card is overclocked and is a very fast card for just taking something out of the box.

For $20 more than she spent on hers you could double the performance once again. Welcome to the forums!

Wow. Thanks for such a quick reply. I was looking at that review I believe. I just started a new job so I'm going to revamp my rig pretty damn soon. I'll be sure to drop a line here to make sure everything is up to par. I'm going to be going for an Athlon 64 and a PCI-e video card. But you'll be sure to see that thread in the coming weeks. Well thanks again for the info. I'm going to ninja her video card now.
