Just wanted to know your opinions on the ATI and AMD merger?

As long as the merger doesn't block future nVidia chipsets, I think it will be fine.

yeah the biggest impact/change I see coming is the whole chipset side.

AMD should let ATI do what they want for GPUs. I don't like the idea of AMD controlling ATIs graphic chips.

Imagine AMD graphic cards, that would sound stupid.

I'm sure it will be like the Dell and Alienware merger where both keep the same name.

Uhoh, Intel has pulled ati's chipset license. The chipset wars have begun!

I went ahead and added a poll for the next 60 days to get an idea of what people think.

TBH while i like the idea of a partnership, i do not look forward to the swapping of staff. I fear that AMD will drive ATI into the ground just as its seems bent on doing to its self. I have been a huge ATI supporter because they have since the 9700 seiries had better image quality than NV IMO at higher resolutions. I fear that they will no longer hit release dates, make awsome advances and then sit on their ass for 2 years, or worse just stop making good parts all together. Over all i think this buy out is bad for the consumer and VERY risky to AMD who is totaly broke now.

I second both of those hopefully it does not have an effect on Nvidia chipset and I would have preferred to see and AMD/Nvidia merger....

well i of course talked with ATI and AMD both today and they both noted that the ATI shareholders have to approve this and that should be final in Q4 2006. So in terms of big changes fast none are coming.

also point out that usually the best intel CPU chipsets are intels own, however this time ATI's RD600 apparentley is a better OC'er than the intel offerings.

Still i dont like the idea of this merger, a company that does everything is never good, it means everything become mediocre.
I really hope that doesnt happen, but its a possibility.

Also if the ATI shareholders dont agree, ATi have to pay $115 Million to AMD as a termination fee. (Inq)

In the event that the transaction does not close, ATI has agreed to pay AMD a termination fee of $162.0 million under circumstances specified in the acquisition agreement. The transaction is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2006.

I say bad - intel already pulled the chipsets like someone else mentioned, so for the Intel side it might only be Intel chipsets.

Plus I like Nvidia :p and AMD.

Fewer choices is always bad for the consumer.

You would think AMD would want to work at getting the cpus up to par first ...*sigh*

close enough... i think... still a large amount of money, i think its so large to put the shareholders off rejecting it.

P.S It isnt a large sum in relation to the amount being paid, but for a small-ish company like ATI its huge.

I dont get the chipset license reference, is intel stopped making for ATI or is ATI not allowed to make for intel now?

I want an RD600 conroe mobo

Plus, I hope that ATI will still be ATI, even though its supposed to be AMD Graphics.

Will Nvidia still be able to compete, now being the 'underdog'?

it means ATI cannot make anymore chipsets for Intel i beleive, but chipsets such as the RD600 and those already in production are unnafected i think.

when it does happen, it should help amd get into the 65nm game faster and the 45nm faster as well

meaning, more chips at that size meaning more competition for intel and lower prices for us

dont care about the chipset on boards much, as i wont go back to amd again (tried to go back twice, no luck)
