Looking into a cheap dedicated game server...

Post by Sovereign »

I have a Pentium D 830 and an ECS 945P-A that I won in a contest here (thank you!) some time ago. I need, then, a videocard, power supply, case, RAM, DVD-ROM drive and hard drive. This is what I have picked out thus far (trying to keep it cheap, me and some buds are going to split the cost if we can for sure find a place to put the thing).

Videocard - eVGA GeForce 6200 LE TC

Power Supply - FSP Group (Forton Source) 350w w/24 pin ATX

Case - Thermaltake Mambo

RAM - PQI Turbo 1GB (2x512MB) DDR533

DVD-ROM - LG IDE CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Drive

Hard Drive - WD 40GB SATA1.5Gbps

Before shipping, this adds up to $237.65. Should I get 2GB RAM or will 1GB cut it? There will be 8 players on the server, maximum and only one game running at a time. It will most likely be run off a university connection.

Looks good

One gig should be plenty, ive seen people run dedicated servers on alot less and they didnt have any problems.

I was going to say to get a cheap PCI video card, but that 6200 is already damn cheap. I think 1GB should be more than enough for 8 players. I had 1GB for 30 players and that was pusing it, but still do-able. Upgraded to 2GB and it was all good.

Oh yes, I must also add, I was searching for a place to colocate my box, and they either said no to the box, only 1U rack mount, or it was pecking expensive. The inexpensive places didn't offer much throughput at all, so I said screw it. Just a heads up on the fact that colocating a box isn't cheap! Just rent one otherwise.

University datacenters and "educational purposes" FTW...

Or my friend down the street is getting 8Mbit/1Mbit cable...that works too.

Either Illinois Wesleyan University (speedtest.net shows 3Mbit down/7Mbit up reliably from my dorm) or Illinois State University or my friend's house where he is getting 8Mbit down/1Mbit up cable.

If we get the server located in the house, does that still go? I mean LR gave me the parts so it's not a question about whether the ad will be there, just whether I get 1GB more of memory... :) Make it DDR2 that the server can use and you get a full banner ad and sponsor status if all goes well.
