IDE vs. SATA

What kind of performance gain can I expect by upgrading from an IDE hard drive to a SATA hard drive. I know things will load faster but can I expect higher FPS? I currently have a WD800JB drive, so it isn't an ancient drive.

I was told the difference isn't great, until you get into the bigger drivers. Small-ish drives will pretty much perform the same, given the same specs.
Obviously, an 8mb or 16mb cache will perform better than a 2mb cache.
Same with speed. A 7200rpm drive will show a little better access time than a 5400rpm drive.

There will be no difference in FPS of games, the only difference will be load times.
But for you to notice that much of a difference in the load times you'd have to get a much bigger drive (~200GB) so as the read and write speeds are more than your current HD.
So like Ice said, if you get an 80GB SATA they will pretty much perform the same.

agree with all above
I have a 250gb ide and a 250gb sata and the sata drive is faster loading, but will not increase game performance.
You would need a better video card to increase fps ( mostly - sometimes cpu, and memory upgrades will help a bit too )

Oh I use the IDE for windows and the sata for the swap file and just data. i guess I am a bit backwards ;)
