Buying cheap-ass components...

I normally would not go anywhere near cheap, no-name parts, BUT as a college student looking for a CHEAP dedicated server, I am looking at this case/PSU combo because it cuts the price of PSU/case in half vs the Fortron + Thermaltake dealie. Should I do it (this PC doesn't have to do anything 'cept serve up occasional games and store files) or should I bite the bullet?

Hey it'll do what it say's on the tin :P
Just dont put anything expensive in there incase that PSU kinda breaks sometime and takes something out with it :axe:

Dont see any reasons why you shouldnt, its not like it'll be taxed much right...

I have to agree with Dan.

That case is seriously ugly... put some money into modding it. 8)

I think that PSU is total crap. They upped the 5 volt and 3.3 volt rails to get the rating, while the 12 volt, the most used rail, is only 16 amps. Personally, I wouldn't buy it. For a dedicated server you might want something better.

If you need a PSU with a lower wattage Sparkle is good.

definetly with the above poster. No matter what the cost of a rig get a good PSU, and that one will do fine, or another fortran/sparkle that fits your budget

Would this one cut it seeing as the other one is out of stock?
Sparkle 300

And, seeing as this is a server, would this case cut it?
Cheap Raidmax

I have this basic OCZ RAM and also a DVD/CD reader in addition to a an 80GB Hitachi SATA2 and finally an eVGA 6200-TC PCI-E

What kind of CPU will you be running? It says "ETA: 9/19/2006 10:48:00 AM", so it might be worth waiting a week since they cost the same. Maybe you can save a few bucks during that time.

If you don't mind a flimsy case with sharp edges it will be fine. Also apparently the case doesn't have any shipping protection. It's just a case in a cardboard box. So there is a chance you might get it broken. There is a few cases in the $10 to $20. You might want to look at those.

I would be very wary about buying this because of the PSU. This is something that you really should reconsider and spend a few extra dollars on something that is proven. You can find cases for cheap that will do the job adequately, however do yourself a favor and do not go cheap on the PSU. It will save you money and frustration in the long run.

Thanks but that is OVERKILL. I have changed my mind on PSUs and will be considering an Antec 350w SmartPower 2.0
