HELP: Computer dropped on floor, what got damaged?

Post by Sovereign »

My roommate's computer (his secondary) just took a tumble off the top of my Thermaltake Armor case. The acrylic plastic making up the case cracked. The computer was powered on at the time. Only random crap on the screen now. I know the HDD is gone (probably a head crash), what about the videocard/CPU? Data was backed up, only a little bit of music etc and a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP2.

more than likely it's just a hdd if anything... I've knocked hard drives off the test bench onto a carpeted floor and they worked fine... you might get lucky.

The screen only displays a jumbled mess, and I can't test the videocard because it's AGP. However, it fell onto a HARD dorm floor...

Just out of curiosity, what was it doing on top of your computer?

If it fell onto a hard floor, a capacitor or seven might have broken off of something. I'd say take everything apart and inspect for visible damage, if nothing looks bad, put just the basics back and see. Only that's a lot of work.
AMD Opteron 1224SE "Santa Ana" = DFI Lanparty UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G
Crucial Ballistix 4x1GB DDR2 800 = Corsair CMPSU-750TX
Sapphire 4870 1GB = Sceptre X20WG-Naga 20" = Logitech X-530 5.1
Seagate 320GB (SATA II) x2 = Samsung SH-S203B (SATA)

It's a dorm. :P

And if it's anything like the dorms I stayed in at university, the two single beds probably already take up half the floor space. :P

it could be simple as something got unseeded. its open the case, umplug and replug everything back into the slot. check the cpu, if it look like the heatsink stuff is where it should be, i wouldnt worry about it.

If we can find a digital camera (yes I'm aware of using friends for this) I'll upload a pic or two.

When I was doing an upgrade I put my hard drive on top of my case, then I tipped the case, and the hard drive fell on the floor. It happened 4 years ago, and the hard drive still works now. It was a Fujitsu drive.

Fujitsu drives are awesome. I've got a 13GB Fujitsu left from my first computer build ever, probably the only part that didn't suck. (It was a celeron machine)
