Do think it will be worth getting a 8800GTX (or even a GTS) for a 3800 X2 and mid line 2gigs of ram? At least for the time being until i get moar money to upgrade everything else. LOL
I know its odd thinking, but black friday is comming up and i dont have much of a choice, if one at all.
depends... If you are wanting to go with an nvidia chipset like the 680i for your next platform then I'd say go for it. You already know you'll be very GPU limited as if you look at Kentfield with just a multiplier increase I got 4,000 more points out of my system on 3dmark06!
i plan on going quad core with a main stream system in the future, its just now i am extremely limited on things and if i had the option to get this in a few months or more upgrade ram and proc and board... I am just thinking on the fly lol
A video card will still be the best bet for improving your gaming performance. While you'll technically be CPU limited in some situations 3D Mark is not the end all be all of gaming performance.
Depends on your resolution. I haven't really been keeping up to date for benchmarks with the 8800 series, but what would take take with maxed AA/AF to bring it to a point where the game was cpu limiting? 1920x1200, 2560x1600?
Though then you get into the problem of not being able to afford a monitor that can display what your video card can output. ;)
Just to follow up, I'm running an 8800GTX on an opty 165 at 2.5. While it is CPU limited in 3dmark, I run 1680x1050 with everything maxed in most games, and with 16xAA and AF forced in the driver. Buttery smoove
If you're short on cash you should wait until DirectX10 cards are well established. Prices will drop and you will know what's good and what's bad. I think if you buy a 8800 right now you're a beta tester for nVIDIA.
