Need help quick!

Post by A10Pilot3 »

Hey guys,

I need to build a laptop like right now! and I've never looked at building a notebook or anything, so if you guys could help me out, it's for a college student, hopefully around $1000 or a little more, and a good one that wont be outdated for awhile. This won't be for gaming, but I need it to be fast, so like 512+ memory and 1.7M CPU. Remember I'm competing against Gateway here!!

I owe you guys.

Please post links to parts that I should get because I have no clue what/where to get them.

Thanks!

Not going to happen for $1K US...

A realistic goal is probably closer to $1.5K US...

Its hard to build cheap laptops, but you get more of a deal when you try match the highend systems.

those walmart prices aren't bad to be honest... have you looked into those? Stick Win XP Pro on them and be done.

All prices from DealTime

Pentium 1.7 M - $295 - http://legitreviews.dealtime.com/xPO-In ... _2MB_1_31V

Asus M3Ne - $650 - http://legitreviews.dealtime.com/xGS-as ... CR-01~DW-0

Fujitsu Laptop 60gig HDD - $130 - http://legitreviews.dealtime.com/xPO-Fu ... HARD_DRIVE

Kingston DDR SDRAM 512mb - $130 - http://legitreviews.dealtime.com/xPC-Ki ... d97dba6d55

Total Price - $1205

That's the best I can come up with... I think the laptop may come with wireless already... but I'll leave the rest of the research up to you if you are interested.

Here's the Asus M3Ne product page, but the link to the specifications is bad... go figure. http://usa.asus.com/products/notebook/m ... erview.htm

good luck.

hell, if you're going to link to Wal-Mart, you might as well throw in some duct tape and tupperware.
I'm now very embarrassed, i think for the first time in history, Wal-Mart has been linked on a serious computer forum. whats next....Target, .99 Store, Piggly Wiggly?

I could have posted a link to Target or Piggly Wiggly but I don't think that they sale laptops :)

The only reason that I posted the link to Wal-mart is because he is looking to get/build a cheap laptop and I saw an article about Wal-mart having a sub $500 laptop on their site and posted the link for him to check out. That sub $1000 does not look to bad but I am just not familiar with the brand. I know that Wal-mart is not a place for serious computer users but it is a good source for some cheap prices (besides Newegg :) ).

Acctually I'm not looking for a 'cheap' I'm just helping a friend get a laptop for college by spending as little as possible for a decent laptop. She might buy my 2 year old 1.7 (non-M) with 512mb ram and 30gig hard drive. Last year she rented a Gateway from the college for $1000 so I told her she might as well just buy one for that much. Either that or she would buy a new Gateway for whatever a decent one would cost. Either way though, she needs one soon!

now come on how can you say that??

celeron??

256Mb memory??

Anyway, I think that set-up for $1205 is pretty good, does that just need Windows XP? and I looked at the specs and it said something about 256Mb built in, does that mean there is a stick of 256 in it already?

A pentium-m 1.7 is a tad overkill for a basic college system if you ask me. just go to gateway or dell and let her order one. That way it has a full warranty and if something happens she can get it fixed quickly and without and problems for having a custombuilt one.

I used another friends 1.6 yesterday and it seemed like a good processor. It's not just what you need, it is also about not having to upgrade next year. I provide warranties for all computers I build, because I'm thinking about starting a business. Please just no celeron. I want to go on the laptop building adventure.

if you are starting a business, do I get consulting fees? :) I don't know anything about that setup other than the parts I listed.... Contact Asus to find out what that 256mb is all about.

So that would be 1205 plus XP Home ($90) 1300, plus you forgot a CD drive, anything else? With $100 charge to put it together, I could build and warranty it for less than $1500.

Can you build laptops with like the 3GHz processors in them or just the 1.7M's? And could I build a laptop for around $1000 if I went that way with a lower processor and stuff?

you could, but a pentium m vs a p4 doesnt compare clock for clock, you would be alot happier with the pM vs a p4 mobile or desktop proc in a laptop

I believe a 1.7 is equal to a 2.4, they go up to 2GHz in M but it's like $600. I think it would be smarter to go with a 3GHz. Besides I'm not worried about power, the laptop would be plugged in most the time anyway. Can someone link to a place to buy a barebones?
