a user of pirated software is likely to purchase software from the same maker at some point down the road

Or at least relatively cheap when one joins a newsgroup...15-25 bucks for either 20gb or unlimited downloads, respectively, and you can download, say a $5,000 CAD program, the cost/benefit ratio becomes ever greater.
