Recycling old PC's...

I have had a few older pc's laying around that i have been wanting to find use for. Working for a server company i have been getting more and more into the server world. I have 2 to offer and would love more input.

First is ClarkConnect. For those of you who are familiar with IPCOP, Clarkconnect is 100000 times better. Its a custom linux distro (dont worry you dont need to know linux) that acts as one heck of a firewall/gateway. Also it can act as an FTP server, home file server, and just about anything server. The best part of it...RTG graphs!!!!!!! Show graphs of your network in and out ETC.... If you are wanting to get a little more hot and heavy into your network and wanting to control a little more of your network, I STRONGLY SUGGEST giving this a try. It wasnt that hard to setup and will support those with DSL/PPPoe. A simple installer.

The next one, I am new to today, is FREENAS. Basically will take a computer and turn it into what it says. A NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE DEVISE. It has built in differential and incremental auto backup and stuff like that. It runs off of freeBSD (again you dont have to know anything about linux)

Both of these program once installed onto a computer are controlled via a web interface and is all controlled from there, so you dont have to interact with linux directly. If you have been using these programs for a while let me know i would to know more.
Again PLEASE SUBMIT SOME IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweet... thanks for the heads-up. I've got a few SCSI drives, IDE drives, and the rest of the guts of a PC waiting to be used.

Sweet!!!

I havent seen either of those before, both look like excellent programs.

I use IPCop myself and find it to be an excellent program, but i can see that clarkconnect has alot built in already.

lol i'm still learning up on linux, but i'm installing my first Linux OS soon, and after i build the rig in my sig, the machine i'm on will be converted. i've got a few friends who want some space for their small sites, so i'll be learning as much as i can about hosting, webmastering, etc... i'm just taking my first steps in that direction so i'm sure it shows in my lack of knowledgeable lingo

hum... video surveillance is pretty cool... how much would it cost to get up and running for a basic system? If I did it i'd need 2-3 outside cameras

I did my whole setup from ebay. My PCI card that does 120fps (meaning it will split the frames up per camera you use) for about 100$ But i am finding them cheaper from around 70-100.

Now as far as cameras, you dont want to go cheap. the one i bought from frys was on sale.

And the others were from ebay as well.
Go with one that has a metal frame with BNC connectors and not the RCA and a plastic casing. They are usually less cheap.

All and all with a card and 2-3 cameras, you could probably do, $300-400. And that is a realllllllllyyyyyy good price.

For freeNAS, Sure, you would just want a bigger hard drive...it would kind of defeat the purpose. For clark connect, YES but your web interface would just be a little slow pulling up. You will find that linux works by putting most of its "operations" in the ram so it increases performance as oppose to using the hard drive when its running. So a little more ram will help, but what you have should work just fine.

SmoothWall is another Linux based Firewall.
You can either install it to a HDD or run it via liveCD.
Very easy to use.
