refurbing my bros comp.

Post by mpire »

Well I owe my little bro big time, so I am taking some parts from my old computer, and buying a few things so he can play a few games...

He wants to play; BF2, CSS, and Command and Conquer 3.

The motherboard on my old computer went bad, so I was looking for a cheap replacement with an AGP slot.
I found this one, and I was wondering if it would work.

I also need a new GPU, and I had this in mind:

The parts I am taking over from my old computer are:
Antec 200w PSU(Has been powering my PC + 2 Hard drives and a X1550 Pro)
Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 Ghz
Audigy 2 ZS Gamer
and a gig of PC2100 ram.

Well, none of that would be on my recommendation list. If you owe your little Bro big time, why not get a barebone system and use what you can from the old. If you really cant afford it, then i dont recommend a re certified MoBo and that one says out of stock anyway.

back when those CPU's came out i was building AMD exclusively, so maybe someone has some good suggestions.

Hello and welcome to the LR forums!

pc2100 = DDR 266Mhz! How old is this system?
What motherboard is in it now?

To be honest, that system is quite dated for modern day gaming.

I dont have time right now, and Newegg is once again on the fritz, but Im thinking you may want to consider upgrading to a PCIE motherboard. If you cant afford that, I will get back and see if I can find any options. I have to admit, Im not real optimistic.

I would suggest you not go with those. The first place to start is to give us a budget. And see what we can come up with.

PCi Express is the way to go. I am a BF2 series player and you need 2 Gb of RAM also for the game to play well. But if you can't swing that cost 1Gb will do...even 1.5Gb.

Lol ya. He needs the system for like 3 months, then his budget will shoot up to around $1500.

I bought him a X1550 PCI(No AGP on that old mobo!) to use before the mobo crashed, and I can still take the card back.

I dunno, I was just looking at something cheap to hold him over until he gets his report card. The computer could play BF2 on 1024x768 on low settings at 30-45 FPS, I was hoping not to spend much, but I could spend around $200-300 and not regret it.

The problem is that if you spend 200-300, you will regret it.

Take it back if you can.

With a budget of $1500 you can buy everything in my sig and then some. Its not exactly a top of the line, enthusiast rig, but its a pretty solid gaming rig that will last a few years. If you prefer Intel, you can build an equivalent Intel rig for around the same price.

I built mine for around $1300 after rebates, which includes Case, PSU, 2g ram, 320 HDD, CDRW, Nvidia 7250 gt, Crosshair MB, AMD5200x2, 21" LCD.

If it were me, I would be patient for the 3 months and put that 200-300 towards a nice rig for your bro. Its hella fun to build 'em too! Best of luck, sorry I cant help ya out.
