I just want to be able to have a place to store files. Say for example a friend needs to grab some Mp3s or antispyware software. He can log in and get the files

IRC FTW!... I sent my friends files through IRC rather then MSN or uploading it.. but there is a way to set it up so they can search and take what ever program they want .. so this might be a method you can look into.. how to do that I am not sure

i would just set up a box with all your stuff well organized, then just install a nifty FTP server program, i know WinXP has a built in FTP utility but i haven't had the opportunity to play around with it..

then if you have a static IP hand it out to your friends and give them a username/pass to the FTP, they can access it from IE or from an FTP client. im not sure of an easy route if you have a dynamic ip...

(this will work on LAN and over the internet)

AIM has an option that allows you to specify a folder, and anyone on your buddy list can access that folder. You might be able to create a group in your buddies that only allows them to access it too.

Though of using something like gigatribe.

From the page's blurb it sounds just what you are after.

Filezilla ftp server works well, you can hand out usernames/passwords to people who you want to have access, and configure what kind of access they get.
