3rd party Data Recovery

i've got a friend with a funny story.. he was migrating his data to an external drive so he could have an image to mirror on another drive. right when he finnished the copy and deleted everything off the original drive to clear up the space his cat bumped the external drive 3 feet off the desk and onto the floor!

so now the hard drive spins up then makes a knocking noise and attempts to spin up again...

he tried calling Drive Savers and they charge from $1600.00 to $2600.00 to recover the data (100GB off a 400GB drive) and found another smaller place that only charges $600-$1000. the pictures and stuff he has on there are worth the cost of recovery so he wants some place that will get the data if its there to get and not risk it. cause if he goes to a cheap place then they can't get it but drive savers can, drive savers will charge extra cause the seal was broken on it already.

just looking for some input from ya'll..

http://www.runtime.org is a good "Do It Yourself" if you're willing to buy it and the drive is physically working.

I would recommend OnTrack (http://www.ontrack.com). They are the de-facto best from what I have heard. They can deal with a drive that has physically failed, even one that has been damaged by liquids or fire. They're not miracle workers, but they're darned close.
