It doesn’t seem that long ago that having a cell phone with a camera was only for those who had an excess of money laying around. It was more of a status symbol for those who wanted ’1-up’ their friends and family. A few short years later, a camera phone was pretty much a standard. They’ve slowly replaced stand alone digital cameras at family gatherings, and events across the board. The traditional cell phone camera doesn’t really compare to a quality digital camera, but Nokia is looking to close the gap with their latest Smart phone. The Nokia Lumia 1020 smart phone sets itself apart from the competition with a 41 Megapixel camera!

This would be a nice phone if it was rather focusing on better quality pictures, rather than BS-ing with 41MP! I have a camera that has 6.7MP but can do 100x better pics than this gadget. To take 15MB sized pics just ads more work to transfer and resize those pics, since people aren't making pics with their phones to make giant posters on clipboards! Also, I would never buy a phone with fixed storage capacity! For these reasons I wouldn't want a phone like this for free.

The casual camera megapixel race was stupid when it went beyond 5MP, insane at 9MP, and is now beyond lunacy. None of these cameras - even regular compact units - have a sensor or a lens that can handle those resolutions. Compared to a 4MP All you get are noisier, fuzzier pictures and exponentially bigger file sizes.

Sadly, you can't even buy a good 4 or 5MP compact camera any longer. Except on eBay, where the last of the breed command their original prices or more. It is the triumph of marketing over everything. Technology is supposed to get better, not worse. What a shame. And something like this Nokia is a parody of a travesty.
