we feel for you man, i know you were close to that adapter. but remember life is short and there are other adapters out there and one is just right for you. you can move on, all you have to do is be strong.
LOL

Anyway, yeah, sorry to hear about the loss. Hopefully Asus is cool about giving you a new one :)

OUCH! ](*,)

Did just the adapter fry? Sounds like it. This is why it is good to wait and not jump in on the cutting edge (SLI, etc.). Wait to see how it sorts out before spending your hard earned money.

It would be great to reproduce the conditions with another adapter to see if the same thing happens. It may be that the adapter has inherent voltage limitations, which will limit its overclocking, or maybe you just got a bad adapter?

Hopefully you will get another one, I am sure ASUS is very interested in what you are doing. I wonder if it could be vmodded? :-k

yeah, ASUS said all the cards are selling fast and they are out of stock. My card failed and took out my P4C800E and P4P800E boards. I have two dead boards and a dead adapter that I am sending back for RMA.

Apoptosis, during your correspondence with ASUS, have they at any point specified why there's limited motherboard support for the adapter?

I'm assuming that any board is capable of supporting the adapter, but not without a microcode update.

If this is the case, then I could post a very concise guide on how to go about attaining and updating the microcodes. It's actually a very simple process.

Furthermore... I recently discovered that Intel manufactures Dothans in both the Socket 478 PPGA and 479 H-BPGA interfaces, which would indicate that the adapter isn't exactly a requirement... provided that my previous speculation holds true.

If this hurdle is as small as it seems to be, the only problem left is devising a method of absorbing the pressure imposed by conventional heatsinks. The thought of crushing a Dothan makes me cringe.

I believe he's referring to vendors and OEMs.

It'll be at least a week or two before you see the adapter go retail.

teg, my understanding is that the 478 is for OEM and blade servers only. and i think you have to pair it with some of the server chipsets.

Architecturally, the S478 version is exactly the same as the S479 version... the only difference being that pin, which might I add, does absolutely nothing.

Both of them support the i855PM, GM, and GME chipsets, and even use the same microcode.

Yes, pretty strange that after all the hype and kudos around the net it still hasn't been released

I would offer but shipping outside the US is a major pain in the ass :( and you never know if it will get where you want it. Things were so much better when i was working for the US embassy can you say diplomatic pouch :)
