A Look Back At The AMD Athlon Processor Series

Since the AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 6400+ Black Edition is said to be the last speed improvement on the Athlon series we take a look at five years worth of Athlon processors to see how far performance has come using the latest benchmark utilities. Read on as LR starts with the Athlon XP 1800+ and five other Athlon processors to see how the processors fair.
After going back five years and looking at the performance of the Athlon XP 1800+, it is amazing to see how far we have come in just five years. A good number of our readers still have Athlon XP systems in use and this article was a great opportunity to show them what they are missing out on as none of the major hardware review sites include these processor in updated performance charts any longer. To be honest, I was surprised how well the Athlon XP system did and that it made it through days of torture testing even though many of those parts have been used in nearly four years!

First system I built from parts was a 1900+, long since been gifted to family.
The jump in tech in 5 years is insane.

Has it really been that long?
Even though our machines are single core processors at home, the AMD Athlon's are more abundant than the other maker.
My first AMD Atholn was a K-7 750Mhz Thunderbird. We've had an Athlon 1800+ and currently have an Athlon 2200+ and 3400+ running today.

Great article... brings back the time when. It would be nice if you would mention the name of the Intel processor (and the cost) that you refer to when you say that the AMD cannot keep up with.

which Intel processor would you like me to comment on? The E6750, E6850, X6800, QX6700 or QX6850?
It wasn't meant to bash AMD or anything just a comment to say that Intel has the performance lead. And if you want to get critical on the prices the E6750 and 6400+ are close to the same... The 6400+ is $260 and the E6750 is $195.... factor in overclocking performance and uh the results are well one sided.
That might actually be a fun article the E6750 and the 6400+.

Send the test rigs this way and I'll do the article. For my payment though I'll only be shipping back the AMD system. I have an Athlon T-Bird 1200Mhz in a box somewhere with a motherboard and SDRAM. I went from a Celeron 366Mhz to that 1.2Ghz T-Bird and I thought I was on top of the world. Remember that commercial about the Athlon and Pentium with the train? Which computer do you use to stop the train in time? If you picked Intel you're not going to make it.

... many years ago (in a galaxy far away) I really hated first Athlons.
I just got myselef Super Socket 7 motherboard (with AMD-K6-III+ @500MHZ, 128 MB RAM EDO 60ns, and 1MB S3 AGP video card), and AMD abandoned me!!!

Well the quad core QX6850 and the QX6700 are out... tthey cost almost $1000.00.
Out of the 6400+, E6750, E6850, or X6800, which one is the best bang for the buck... meaning best overclocker or best performer? How do they compare to the top AMD chips? Simply, which would you buy?

Indeed! And I still have several on hand in a box at home.
Oh, those were the days to play. Some good days while others just done right frustrating.
Articles like this still gives the flare of keeping the older systems around for other uses.

I remember my first highend computer was in 2002 and it was an AMD Athlon 1.33ghz. I remember a lot of people dropping their jaw to that.

first computer I bought was from best buy, AMD K5 350 I believe it was. turned out to be a lemon, so I returned it and upgraded to a celeron 500 which I still have. One of my old sitting around boxes is an AMD Duron 700, and my daily driver is an Athlon 2200+. Aside from that first machine, all my AMDs have been totally reliable. Can't really say too much bad about them at all.

I still run on an AMD Athlon XP-M running at 200 x 11.5 . (1.65v)
I built the system back in January of 2005, when the processor was only $90.
I just recently re-applied some Artic Silver 5 and it has dropped about 10C in temps. I know that it is ungodly slow compared to what is out there now, but I want to wait until Barcelona/Penryn.
Even though it is sort of slow, it served me well for almost three years. So I think I got my money's worth out of it.

I wanted to run these tests on my PC to see if upgrading to the AM2dual core 4200 would really be a big jump or not. I ran CineBench R10. I got numbers that aren't anywhere near what you had on your graph. CineBench gave me numbers like....CPU 1684 and OpenGL 3558. How can I convert my numbers to yours to make a good comparrison?

After you run the benchmark it will tell you the time it took to complete the rendering near the status bar.

That makes my PC more behind than I thought.....It took my PC 8:44 to fully render the image which would make it 524 seconds which puts it just a little slower than the socket 754 system which is how old? The CPU is the same except for the socket but the Video card is better on mine and the chipset should be better ( NF4 Ultra). The ram is, I believe, exactly the same as used on the 754 system tested.

I think the Skt 754 3200+ ran at 2.2Ghz not the 2.0Ghz you have now. I know the 754 3000+ ran at 2.0Ghz and when I bought my 939 3000+ it ran at 1.8Ghz.

EH nice Review. U ARE absolutely right when u said "some people still use AMD XP systems". I have AMD XP 2500+ Mobile over clocked to 2520 MHz and I love it! I recently bought Abit AN7 mobo (helped me get the over clock). My GPU is XFX 6600GT AGP edition. And 2048 mb of RAM so I am set for at least another 6 month. Anyways I just felt like posting my specs to prove that Athlon XP is still in the game (although I am getting tired of it)...
