NVIDIA Forceware 163.44 Beta Drivers For Bioshock

NVIDIA recently released Forceware 163.44 beta that offer improved support for the game BioShock and we take a look at them to see if performance really improved since previous drivers. Using the full retail version of BioShock we benchmark the game using FRAPS on Forceware 158.18, 162.22 and 163.44 drivers on an XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card and found that these drivers offer significant frame rate increases!

Since 2K didn't include a benchmark script or utility in BIOSHOCK I used FRAPS version 2.9.1 to capture the frame rates for 120 seconds at two different scenes that I personally selected from the game. If you don't know anything about Bioshock, let me set the scene for you. After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, you discover a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn and you get to kill them.

Personally I had no problems with the 163.44 drivers (Vista Buisness x64) , but I did the one hotfix non-the-less .

I would install 163.44, but it seems like Clone doesn't seem to be working very well. I also would install the hotfixes, but I heard they have some problems with driver-signing? And I think there are actually 5 hotfixes, they didn't mention the one about 2GB addressing.

Great article, however. For us Vista + nVidia users, reading these articles and subsequently updating is like having cheesecake 24/7.
