AMD Radeon HD 4770 Video Card Review

Post by Apoptosis »

AMD is launching the World's first 40nm graphics card today with the introduction of the ATI Radeon HD 4770. With such a small die size, it means that AMD can fit more dies per wafer and reduce costs. AMD expects that the Radeon HD 4770 should sell for $109 with an available rebate of $10, which brings the final price to into the uber sexy sub-$100 category.

The ATI Radeon HD 4770 graphics card might cost $109, but card doesn't look and perform like what many would expect out of a card in that price range. The Radeon HD 4770 was able to keep up with the Radeon HD 4850 and GeForce 9800 GTX+ in numerous benchmarks as a testament to that. For those that game in the 1280x1024 to 1680x1050 resolution range the Radeon HD 4770 should be fine for most games with average settings as our testing had the image quality cranked all the way up in almost every test and the card did fine.

Awesome! :) Any idea on the release date in Aus? and an estimate on the price assuming that i7's (920) is still worth $500 over here and the 4870X2 is still $889!

Did you try a 3rd party app for overclocking? As you pointed out, you should have been able to oc the memory a whole lot more than to 850MHz.

X-bit labs did a nice job on modifying Riva Tuner to work with the HD4770.

Are there two different reference coolers? I think there are, but not too sure. If I get to choose, I prefer the cooler that you guys got over what Hardware Canucks got.

Not sure what the deal is with the coolers I'll have to look into it... I like the one on my cards also... I got a pair and am working on CrossFire now:

Very nice CrossFire results for $198 as it nears the performance of a GeForce GTX 275 and that is a $259.99 graphics card!

Is the HD 4830 discontinued? If not then this card is not that great of a deal as of this writing. The MSRP is $109 but you can find the HD 4830 for $77.99 after a $10 mail in rebate at ZZF.

You will definitely see an improvement compared to your 8800GT. Bad thing is that the improvement is not significant, so you'd get maybe a 20% increase in FPS at most. Hardware Canucks has the 9800GT included in their test, and the 4770 is always faster than the 9800GT.

If you run F@H, it'll fold a lot slower than your 9800GT for sure.
