Thanks for the review. I think I might get a green for my HTPC since I think the black is overkill for it. Though it looks like a really nice drive. Nice one WD!

Green drives historically use less platters than their faster brothers. It's not surprising that the difference in platter density and the rotational speed made that much of a difference. Still the Green drives do have a place in HTPCs and other places where noise and/or heat is a factor.

Just an update for everyone...

I put this drive in one of my personal systems in 2009 and just started getting the gut wrenching knock of death. The drive lasted 13,000 hours before issues, which is 541 days or 1.5 years of up time. Not bad, but not the greatest.

hmm... hope my 1TB versions last longer than that. I have four WD1002FAEX 1TB Black drives in a NAS. They have been running 24/7 for 299 Days 14 Hours 48 Minutes as of this post.

So, back in May 2012 my Western Digital WD2001FASS (2TB WD Black) Hard Drive failed after several years of use. WD replaced the drive with the WD2002FAEX (2TB WD Black) Hard Drive and it barley lasted 6 months before getting a couple errors on it. The total uptime was just 1905 hours, which is under 80 days of use.

Went to move my data over to another drive and sure enough, not all the files will copy. ugh Spent 2+ hours this morning moving data around and swapping drives. Not the way I planned on spending my morning!

I've had both Seagate and WD drives go kaput on me. One was a WD 160GB IDE drive that they sent me a refurb back for, it lasted maybe 6 months and died also, and wasn't even in use much. I'm getting to where I don't trust any company anymore, quality control sucks universally and its buyer beware.

With these drives getting so large it is pretty easy to get bad sectors... We want the capacity, but not the increased chance for issues that come with it!
