ATI Radeon HD 5870 DX11 Video Card Review

Post by Apoptosis »

Today is the launch of a pair of the most anticipated video cards of all time, the ATI Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5850! These are the world's first and only DirectX 11 graphics cards, and yes they are out before Windows 7 or a DirectX 11 ready video game has even hit the market. Truth be told, AMD has WHQL certified drivers out for Windows 7 and the new Radeon HD 5000 series is a monster to say the least.

Image
From a performance perspective the ATI Radeon HD 5870 blew away the Radeon HD 4890 and the GeForce GTX 285 graphics cards in the benchmarks that we ran on Windows 7. The Radeon HD 5870 is by far the fastest single GPU graphics card that we have ever benchmarked and it is the real deal. It doesn't have an annoyingly loud fan, suck down obsessive amounts of power or heat up your room while you aren't gaming. The user experience with this card is very well rounded and it is tough to find anything negative to say about it...

Oh. MY. GOD. i cried when i started reading this, more power than a GTX 295 or 4870X2, using the power of a GTX 285(/less)

IMAGINE: Crossfire, LN2 cooling, cant even think of how well it will do in vantage, if it can outscore any combination on the market when OC'd OR stock in Crossfire anyway

GREAT article, been waiting years for ATI to take the crown back uncontested. phenom still needs a bit of work to clear Intel out entirely, glad they got video cards back at least

Any chance ATI is going to get back on top of the Folding scene also? I remember when the x1900 series was considered cheating.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.0GHz

All wrapped up in a Lian-Li PC-G70a

While those are very nice cards at prices that are actually reasonable (NVIDIA take note), I'm not going to run out and get one right away. I haven't been gaming much, DX11 games are still yet to make it to market and the performance is not compelling enough for me to give up the GX2 just yet.

SWEET LORD ALMIGHTY!

Ok, so I can now loyally remain an ATI Fanboy and not feel shame!

I wonder how easy it would be to water cool this bad boy? If one of these has almost as much power as my two 4870's I think I'm going to be happy running just the one card until the price break in 8 months.

I feel shame. I am switching camps, this will be the first ATI card i've ever bought. I have always been Nvidia or 3dfx. I feel like a traitor but at least ill be a traitor with an insane video card.

That is if I can find one in stock anywhere lol.

HOLY BALLS, BATMAN!!! Seriously, MAD PROPS to ATi / AMD for bringing out this card! I haven't been this impressed by an ATi card since the 9800 Pro that I bought back in 2003! If I didn't buy a GTX 275 a couple months back, I would definitely pick one of these up!! I can't wait to see what NVidia has to counter this with, but from what I've been hearing, nothing special.

Seriously, wow.... that's all I have to say.

Thanks for the spectacular review, Nate!!

Rumor had it that the 5800 series cards would have a 384-bit memory bus width. I'm excited about this card but at the same time with twice the transistors, etc... I was hoping for more FPS than it shows. But then again, the drivers are probable young still and will mature.

Great review. Shame it didn't do too well on overclocking though. Have you tried overclocking using other programs?

I'd love to get my hands on one of this. But alas, I have no use for it.

Shame it didn't do to well? It maxed out CCC OverDrive? How is that not awesome? As for other applications, none were available till this afternoon to overclock beyond OverDrive. When this review was written (last week) none were available by anyone or site including ATI. Trust me we asked and begged.

I dunno. It's just like that I have a feeling where if there were other programs out there or like if Overdrive didn't max out so easily, it could've easily clocked higher.

Does that make sense?

This is just the start though. Faster and better versions are in the works.

Not news on the Nvidia front. But if people remember, they were very quiet right before they released the G92. THey can't afford to give ATI a 4-5 month head start. It's the only DirectX 11 capable card on the market!

I'm glad you mentioned the price of the 5850 or the projected price, it looks much more like the price range I can afford once I finish my last few school payments.
