XFX Radeon 5970 Video Card w/ 4GB of Memory

Post by Apoptosis »

XFX and AMD have partnered together and have designed a limited edition run of Radeon HD 5970 graphics cards with not 2GB, but 4GB of on-board memory. Legit Reviews has the exclusive first look at this upcoming graphics card and from what we have been told it should give the GeForce GTX 480 series a run for its money!

The XFX Radeon HD 5970 4GB Black Edition video card will be a limited edition card with an estimated hundreds of graphics cards being made. XFX expects to begin selling the cards in about a month for roughly $100 more than a standard Radeon HD 5970, which is $699 to $750 if you can find them. This would make the XFX Radeon HD 5970 4GB Black Edition to be around $799 to $850 based on our assumptions. XFX also stated that they will hand pick each of these cards and that overclockers are going to love them...

so basically XFX said to ATI "We won't touch that piece of crap nvidia took so long to release, so lets make something amazing to secure our place above any and all GTX offerings(495)"

Man... video cards are getting bigger and bigger. Sooner or later someone will have to create a video card length database and a list of cases that fit x or y card.

Nvidia didnt like how the original batch of 480 worked out. Several overvolts and overclocks later, they revealed to the world their strategy...zomg, imma stick a 3 slot cooler on the 5870, overvolt, and overclock...profit...

sinking ship...

Nice, more ram that my system has and when would one actually use up all 4GB of ram on their GPU? Hopefully if you've got that much money to waste on that you're rich and benchmark stuff lol

Nah it's a real product... Petunia has been shown off at CeBIT 2010 and has been in the works for many months... XFX used words like Fermented as some bad blood is going on between NVIDIA and XFX right now. XFX says they didn't want to carry GTX470/GTX480, but others in the industry say NVIDIA won't let them carry the cards. I contacted NVIDIA for comment and of course got no response or reply to any of my calls or e-mails, so something is up between the two.

I wonder if this was because of XFX's warranties? My guess is Nvidia cannot sell XFX the speed bins they need for their overclocked cards and XFX (rightly so) won't put in the extra resources to do all the testing NV have been doing with previous generations. So if NV themselves won't provide higher speed bins, what are the chances of the likes of XFX getting good yeilds from cards they speed bin themselves?
Nvidia can't keep up with the demand for standard skew cards, nevermind providing ones that will safely overclock without the need to pump extra voltages and require water cooling.

I have no evidence to back this up, but it does make sense.

Both companies are out to make money and sell GFX cards and in todays economic climate no-one can give up potential sales just because of some bad blood.
(Although Nvidia are the one company who would/could do such a thing; but I doubt it)
