AMD Radeon HD 6950 & 6970 CrossFire Video Card Reviews

Today AMD released their Radeon HD 6900 series of video cards that use the new Cayman GPU. The Radeon HD 690 series consists of the Radeon HD 6950 and Radeon HD 6970 video cards and we have an in-depth review of them for you today. We also run them both in CrossFire to see how they scale and do all the usual tests that we throw at new video cards!

Nice write-up, but I'm not very impressed with the card. It's a good thing I'm not in the market for a new card quite yet!

At $369 the AMD Radeon HD 6970 is priced to compete with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 and we have to say the two cards traded blows.

Why did you say the cards "blow" a few times throughout the review? You never specified why they "blow" (aka: suck ass).

It should be noted that the 6970 does very well at high resolutions such as 2560x1600 or a triple monitor setup of 5760x1080.

As resolution goes up, its relative performance increases over the GTX 500 searies

Yeah but how much of that is due to the 2gb frame buffer and not the actual architecture of the card.

I, for one, am very pleased that this card keeps pace with the GTX 580 and more importantly kicks the snot out of the GTX 570 as it is priced just over the cost of a 570. So what that it isn't the 580-killer! So what that it's not a night-and-day curbstomp over Nvidia! I am pleased that AMD is keeping Nvidia in check, especially considering the feature set and the fact that the 580 is essentially what the 480 should have been in the first place.

I'm definitely going to be selling my 8800 GTS 512 and hop on board the 6970 train. At 1680x1050 this card will more than sate my need for performance and even when I move up to a larger monitor, I'll be set there as well. Thanks for the quick review guys! I was up past midnight and happened to read the conclusions page before I made it to bed. Definitely glad I waited before picking up a GTX 570.

Got'cha. After re-reading at least my quoted part, I get where you can interpret it either way, though what is truly implied is indeed what you said. hehe. My bad!

What happens to performance in Furmark, 3DMark 03 Game Test 4, Perlin Noise, and OCCT with SC8 enabled when you play with the Power tune tech? Is there much of a difference?

Finally, the long waited 6900 cards!
Plan to grab a 5970 or 5950 for my new X-mas build.

Only concern is the heat and noise issue; might just wait until the non-reference design cards comes out.

Pretty good price on these cards too.

nvidia card running With Bokeh filter & GPU Water simulation

ASUS PX58D-E...

I never thought I'd want to use the 3rd PCI-E slot until I picked up two of these cards. Unfortunately the layout of the audio, USB, Firewire and power button connectors are right under the 3rd PCI-E slot so It is difficult to add one there. If that were not the cause, the fact that the 3rd one is so low means that it won't fit in my case because my case only has room for my 1 of the two slots needed for the large cards.

Just a heads up on this motherboard. (Cool Master Sniper case)

Thanks for the review though. I am trying to decide what to do about these cards and the heat/noise they produce. Maybe some aftermarket coolers will come out soon. Let us know if they do.

Does anyone have a guide to opening the card?

I would like to remove the plastic cover so I can give it a custom paint job.
Also to clean dust bunnies and give it some new thermal paste.

I am just afraid I will break it, but I can see in the review that you did a fine job opening this beast.

p.s. I am talking about AMDs 5850 here, but looks a lot like the same casing.
