Crucial M4 / Micron C400 256GB SSD Review

Crucial, best known for their memory products, was the first to put an SSD on the market with a 6Gbps interface way back in early 2010 with the C300 drive. Back then, we ran some tests and found it to be impressive when compared with what was on the market at the time. Since then, a lot has changed and there are a number of 6Gbps interface drives on the market now so competition is definitely stiffer this time around. Will it hit them mark using the same controller with firmware and NAND updates? Read on and see.

The Crucial m4 SSD will be available in several capacities from 64 GB to 512 GB and all should be available this month although pricing is MIA at the moment. Our 256 GB drive rated for up to 415 MB/s reads and 260 MB/s writes which is a little behind that of the Intel 510 Series drive which uses the same Marvell controller - although the m4 utilizes eight channels while the Intel uses ten. Obviously, the firmware employed by each differs and the benchmarks will bear out how they perform in comparison.

Well, since I can't find better place to put this up I'll toss it here;

Crucial released new firmware 0009 for m4 08/25/2011
http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware ... fb063deab4

According to a German review site it'll push read speeds above 500MB/s&improve write speeds as well.

With such improvements it'd be nice if LegitReviews could re-review the m4. Not like I wouldn't believe reviews in gibberish I can't understand without google but to see how improved m4 compares to SF-2xxx drives.. :-k

I think Joe would be willing to take another look at it.
