Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Hybrid Drive Review (ST750LX003)

What happens when you take a large handful of mechanical hard drive and add a pinch of solid state hardware? For Seagate, this formula produces their latest generation of Momentus XT hybrid drives that bring the capacity and price of a traditional spinning platter drive with some of the speed benefits of a solid state drive. Could this make the SSD makers nervous? Check out the article to find out.

Overall, we'd certainly recommend the Momentus XT and frankly wouldn't go back to a plain old hard drive unless we were forced to. The expediency of boot and application load times are something that, once you get used to it, you can't seem to live without. Keep in mind that it may take two or three times for the Adaptive Memory Technology to decide that it should be cached and speed things up. On the down side, every operation is not SSD fast, especially if you're performing it for the first time.

Awesome! I was a smidge underwhelmed with the original XT in both general performance and price point. Not much more expensive than the original 500GB XT and the performance increase has me thinking I might save up for one of these!
Cyberpower special rig
ASUS Prime 450M-A
Ryzen 5 3600 stock
CM Hyper 212 EVO push/pull
24GB DDR4 3000 (soon to be 32GB)
AMD RX 580 8GB
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB NVMe SSD
Lexar 256GB SSD
6GB Seagate hdd
Stock PSU (will upgrade)
ASUS VE278 27" monitor, Samsung Vizio V435-G0 42" 4K TV
Logitech Z533 2.1 Speakers, G935 7.1 headset
MS LXM-00001 Ergonomic kbd
Razer Deathadder Elite, XBOX One wireless controller

I've come a long way from that original Core2Duo build y'all! :supz:

I'd like a couple to run in RAID 0. That should speed things up a bit more. Thanks for the review.

I'm not sure I'm convinced. The whole idea behind the hybrid drive is that the drive can cache frequently used files. As capacity increases, the amount of data that needs to be cached also increases.

I would like to see the benchmarks of this drive after using it for a few months.
