By quad channel, do they mean that each DIMM socket is a separate channel? Was always under the impression that channels were made up of a pair of DIMMs. Not trying to be a wise ass, just wondering if definitions or accepted norms are changing. Typo is a possibility too.

Each slot is a channel. Dual Channel 2 slots as 1, Triple channel 3 slots as 1, Quad Channel is 4 slots as 1.

Sticks are sold in matched sets.

Data load is shared in the matched set.

If I am understanding correctly then, the board only has one channel. Has speed or the way data is handled changed that outfitting a board with two channels been rendered moot? Am I missing the larger picture; having four slots setup in dual channel was the only way to achieve the demanded throughput and has now been resigned to history due to quad channel's introduction?

The board has 4 channels, each ram slot is a channel. single, dual, triple, and quad is how the channels or slots are connected.

Quad handles data faster.

Single Channel (64bit) = one ram slot. On a board with 4 slots the use of the ram would saturate one stick of ram before going to the next. Each slot connected back to the controller with 64 wires.

Dual Channel (128bit) = 2 slots acting as one. On a board with 4 slots, slots 1 and 3 are paired, slots 2 and 4 are paired. Each slot still connected with 64 wires, but since the controller can do 128, two channels used at the same time to fill the 128. Once pair 1/3 is saturated it will move to pair 2/4

Triple Channel (192bit) = 3 slots acting as one. Board in 3,4, or 6 slot configurations. Working in sets of 3 sharing the data load. If you used 4 sticks in a triple channel board it drops back to dual channel. In 6 slot config paired slots are 1/3/5 and 2/4/6, once 1/3/5 are saturated, 2/4/6 comes into play.

Quad Channel (256bit) = 4 slots acting as one. Board has 4 or 8 slots. Working in sets of 4 sharing the data load. In the 8 slot config paired slots are 1/3/5/7 and 2/4/6/8.

Thank you for your patience. Remember the graph from an artilce a while back back. Now I have a better understanding of that article and terminology. If I had to do things over again, would not have received my degree in accounting. This site has helped with my education in this digital genre. The other side of the coin, if it could not be guessed from previous posts, deals with audio.

Still to this day, have not seen the entire movie from beginning to end. John Candy was great. Favorite character of his would have to be Uncle Buck.

Its all good, I run across something new daily when it comes to this.

I know people that are WAY smarter with it than me, and people that are still learning where the ON switch is.
