We weren't sure what kind of tablet experience we should expect for $199 when we started this review. After using the Nexus 7 for a bit we quickly found that this tablet to fully functional and extremely fast. To be honest we were curious how this tablet would do because Adobe recently announced that it will no longer support the Flash Player browser plugin for Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and onwards...

Any idea if Google/ASUS are selling the Nexus at a loss, like the Kindle Fire?

iSuppli says the Google Nexus 7 has a build cost of $152 and the retailers are selling that for $199. The 16GB model, which sells for $249, costs $159.25 according to the company.

ugh, seems nice for a toy or e-book reader. 7" does not a tablet make ;) They all start out selling like hotcakes and then they all drop into a pit of desperation as they try and get people to buy. Just look at the Fire. My wife got the Nook Tablet and the only thing she uses it for is reading e-books because the screen is so tiny. Even my Touchpad screen at 10" makes some websites almost unreadable and I have to zoom in.

I still don't understand how someone can make a 7" tablet with great specs for under $200 yet nobody can smash it out to 10" for less than double the amount. Same hardware, same design, same boards (except maybe the video would have to be upgraded) and use the extra space in the 10" case to store a bigger battery. Am I a total idiot or is that so simple even Apple users could figure it out? I thought Google would be the ones to dethrone Apple by releasing a 10" tablet at a super low price point with awesome specs. I guess I was wrong.

They could... Look at the $50 price jump for <$10 of MLC NAND on the Nexus 7. The companies just don't want to. The hardware wouldn't have to change. The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor could run a 10-inch display just fine. Get your wife to sell that Nook tablet and get the Nexus 7... It's a whole new tablet!

I have the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I use the Nexus 7 over both. It's that much better with the new OS and the faster processor.
