Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD Review

Post by Apoptosis »

Samsung SSDs have been extremely popular which is mostly due to their excellent performance but it doesn't hurt that they've marketed pretty aggressively. Their 840 series, including the EVO and PRO versions, sold very well and were looked upon favorably by many of the review sites including this one. As such, we were excited to get our hands on the new 850 PRO drive to see what Samsung has done to improve upon the 840.

I call this a fail for Samsung. Only thing good about it is the warranty, everything else is meh. I paid around $200 for my MX100 512GB so why would I pay double for this? I can see a bit of a premium price point mainly because of the warranty but I think even the EVO is a better choice.

If they would have made it PCIe then i could see the price increase (really I cant but the industry has some crazy ideas about pricing sometimes) due to comparable items.

SSD is getting cheaper, faster and better longetivity, not more expensive because of a name.

Just my thoughts, curious what others think on this subject. Is this drive worth that much money? Would you buy this over other drives out there? why?

double the price and more than double the performance in a recovered state! The real question is what benchmarks matter when it comes to performance these days?

I saw the recovered state marks but I just dont get it. Doesn't it take a LOT of use to get to the point that it would make a difference? I dunno, maybe i just don't understand the test :? I don't see the EVO in the chart. I would be curious to see how that does also.

Even with that, as an enthusiast, would you pay double the price for that alone? Most SSD drives are close in performance now a days (yes there are exceptions) so I guess if this one test is what you need the drive for it would be worth it for the performance and warranty. Not for me though :) I am a cheap bastard and am tickled pinkish blue with the cost of the Crucial MX100 I put in my system. Only bad thing is that it wasn't available in 1TB.
