I'd hate to think the earlier quake was a precursor to New Madrid letting loose. Last recorded major Quake from New Madrid was December 16th 1811, followed by two more on January 23, 1812, and February 7 1812. When it cut loose it was felt over 50,000 square miles and after shocks were felt through the rest of the winter.

To much Learning channel I guess.

Maybe the pressure buildup and release for the area takes 200 years... previously it doesn't sound like there were any serious damage causing earth quakes, so maybe we won't get them now.

One thought about that is that there is a bit more population now than 200 years ago. With more population comes more structures.

Also, thinking about communications. I wonder what earthquake zone that area is considered - from a telecommunications perspective. For those who don't know, when you build out in a central office there are different earthquake zones that you have to consider. This affects the structure, cable racks, frame bays, basically anything in the CO.

Will be interesting to see what happens in then next couple of years, hopefully it calms back down.
