Small Rant - History and Discovery Channel

Post by Major_A »

Before my old tube TV bit the dust last year I'm surprised there wasn't the History and Discovery Channel's logos burned into the screen. Now both channels are really beginning to piss me off with the crap they are broadcasting.

1st History Channel:
Exhibit A: Ice Road Truckers - How the **** is this history? Doesn't History own A&E where they can air this crap?
Exhibit B: Marked - Tattoos are apparently history now?
Exhibit C: The airings that I find the most interesting come on from 6AM-10AM.

2nd Discovery Channel:
Exhibit A: Dirty Jobs - What do I learn from this?
Exhibit B: Deadliest Catch - I don't care!
Exhibit C: Swords - Let's air more fishing nonsense while we're filming more Deadliest Catch.

These are a few of the frustrations that I feel toward my favorite networks. Unfortunately for me my Dish Network package doesn't have National Geographic or any of the other good History Channel/Discovery Channel sub channels.

I find dirty jobs quite interesting and entertaining. You can learn how some jobs are done and laugh along the way.

Ice Road Truckers was interesting for one episode, same for Ax Men, showed how the job was done... Deadliest catch can be entertaining at times, but its more of the same, somewhat like a train wreck at times, you can't help but watch.

Of the tattoo shows Miami Ink was the best of the tat shows, what they showed on the show (on TLC) was interesting and there was a meaningful story behind what was going on. Like all good things it ended, shop is still there, they got the exposure they were after. The spin offs suck, and have turned into most other reality shows... drama and people fighting with one another.

which brings me to my all time hated show American Choppers, the bikes were butt ugly, and the fighting OMG. When they started the show they shut the cameras off for the fights the bikes were ok. They found the fighting brought the ratings, so more fights turned into crappier more messed up bikes.

I like Myth Busters, Wreckreation Nation, Locked n Loaded, and Clash of the Gods. That's about all I watch on those channels.

I don't in for "Train Wreck TV". I didn't like American Choppers, I didn't like that hot rod show, I don't care for watching loggers, fishers, or any other boring job. The only thing that made Blast Men worth watching was the huge explosions at the end.

You may not like it, but it will make those channels money. If they don't have shows to appeal to everyone, and the common man, then nobody will watch, and they won't make any money, and you'd have no History or Discovery Channels

I agree, a lot of shows on History are not about History. It's like AMC showing Terminator 3, that is not an American Movie Classic, but it brings in the viewers.

The History Channel and The Discovery Channel are among my favorite channels, but I do turn them off when they have on a show I don't like.

All I have to say about The History Chennel is: Bring on more Dogfights!

I understand the economics behind it but let's try to stick with the premise. Remember when MTV primarily played music videos?
