Social Skills 101

This years spelling bee winner is also the poster child for the 'Need for social skills'.... I'm all for home schooling kids, I have several family members that were/are home schooled, but dang, let the kid out of the house from time to time...

He still might have been this awkward if he had been to a school, he'd just had of had a lot more grief because of it.

I'm surprised that text talk hasn't killed all kids ability to spell correctly!

I know several people that have been home schooled. A fair amount of them could run circles around most of the teachers I have had for my schooling; but throw them into an environment where they have to interact with a group or even someone outside of there normal world and the can't function. Thats why I said let the kids out a little more, let them gain some social skills and learn to interact with people.

I can agree with that, they think that since ok for text messaging on phones and IM that its fine for communicating with the rest of the world. Its like when I see 2K4 in stead of 2004, its one more freaking number type it.

Has anyone seen the commercial with the girl and her mom arguing over the cell bill for the text messages? anyone notice the subtitles at the bottom?

What can the parent do Bubba? Find some random kids on the Street and pay them to be that kids friend, hes a bit of a creep I wouldnt go near that kid with a 10 foot post (as bluntly as possible) but if it came to me sitting in teh exam room and being his friend for the english paper Heck id be his friend

What can a parent do, take no make the kid go out side put them on a sports team, hell and chest team for that matter. Just so they get some interaction with someone other than mom and dad. Now granted if they get much past the age of 10 there is no turning back the kid will most likely be stuck in their ways and you can only hope that their collage roommate won't kill them.

I have a couple friends and relatives that home school their kids. Couple of the the kids are normal, they go play outside belong to sports. The others.. not so normal, sure the kid can rattle off pie to the 10th decimal but give'em a frisbee and they will look at you stupid.

Hmmmmm....My sister was home schooled and I worked in a Public School and can say that viritually as a rule, the home schooled kids were more outgoing, personable, and civilized than the public school kids (and that is excluding the emo SpEd kids).

Home schooling has a huge network, they have all sorts of team sports, debate club, spelling bee clubs, even video game clubs. I just don't see the over-all majority as being unsocial.
