Well, Sony decided to axe the newly cut 60GB PS3 in favor for the 80GB $600 PS3... but only for America. (Right now anyway...)
Now why on Earth would they be so STUPID and make a move like this? They only jacked up the cost to make the 80GB version with a game included, only to axe the one that cost them less. Sure, producing only one product will come out cheaper in the end, but why are they digging themselves an even deeper hole!?

Re: Goodbye 60GB PS3 (In America Anyway)
Thought the new 80gb version is missing the emotion chips that are in the 60gb version, sonys goal was to cut down number of chips in each unit.

It is also missing the backwards compatibility chip for the PS2 - it will use software to emulate a PS@ like they did for our European neighbors.

Figures Sony would do something as crappy as this - what a bunch of morons. Lie to everyone about lowering the price jsut so you can bring in a 20gb bigger hard drive, less hardware internally, and charge the same amount of money - boy that makes sense. I hope no one buys the PS3 till they drop the damn price ( too bad people already did

Well R.I.P. Sony.
So they dropped the price $100 to cancel that unit and release a 'better' one at the old price point?
Nice to see that they are screwing even more people over with the crappy PS2 software EMU.

Re: Goodbye 60GB PS3 (In America Anyway)
from what I heard they are only making so many of the $499 60 gigs...after a while the price may go up again.
the plan isnt to discontinue the 60 gig version, but only limit the amount of 60 gigs that are selling for $499, once those are gone they will continue making the 60 gig but at a higher price

Re: Goodbye 60GB PS3 (In America Anyway)
Not actually true, following the blog trail in the OP (or some other blog i read) they managed to confirm from a few Sony execs that the price drop on the 60gb SKU is to clear all current stock so that the 80gb one (with internal cheaper hardware) can be on sale at the original $599 price. They
have stopped making the 60gb one, but have enough stock for a few months.
Apparantly Sony thinks that its better to only have one SKU at one price to avoid confusion.

Re: Goodbye 60GB PS3 (In America Anyway)
I think this is a pretty dumb move on Sony's part... I think it will be another nail in the coffin that they are trying to escape from. I'm kinda sad that things are going this way, but that's how things work I guess.
Re: Goodbye 60GB PS3 (In America Anyway)
If the Wii matures into a platform that supports a broad range of play styles and game types, none of Sony's machinations will matter. But I"m not seeing it. I was hoping Sony would pull their collective head's out of their singular ass and cut the price of this overrated BlueRay player, but no, they have to think long and hard - then manage to screw it up even worse. If they don't get it together by the next holiday season it will be over anyway. And while I'm thinking about it, why hasn't a Korean company made a console yet? Ya know they want to.
