you could try but there may be a few problems...first and foremost, a airplane IS a rudimentary Faraday Cage so it might keep you from making a call anyway. Second, at cruising altitude, which for modern aircraft is quite high (~6.6mi for a Boeing 747), the "call zones" where you have good reception would be quite small and at the speeds of an airplane (~570mph for 747) would go by quite quickly; though the signal would surely make it out the windows during takeoff and landing.
