Visiting Poland

Visiting Poland

Post by godling »

Here's something quite off-topic:

I'll be visiting Poland for work for a month, or maybe a little more. I'm an Indian.

Don't get me wrong, but this will be my first time abroad and I'm very worried :( about cross cultural sensitivities (I don't like using the harsh term "racism"). What are the Polish people like in general and how is the acceptance of foreigners in the society? I feel a little embarrassed saying this, but my skin is "colored" as some say.....so that social stereotype of "inferiority" does apply to me, unfortunately.

When I say "acceptance", I'm not implying that I intend to get married, laid and drunk out of my wits there. I mean just social mingling, making friends etc. Any advice anybody? I hope somebody has experience in these forums!

If there are risks involved, I'll opt out of the programme I'm into, even if it means a setback for me. The last thing I want is some ugly events taking place.

I work with a lot of Polish people. There are 100's of thousands of them here in Dublin. We even have a Polish section on our main newpaper.

I've always found them to be a "sound" bunch of guys and very friendly (not to mention great workers)

I'm sure you'll have a great time there!

I think no matter where you go in the world there is sensitivity to race, religion and culture. Some more than others. However, I think you will find that the average person is tolerant and usually downright friendly if given the chance.

Great to hear that Ken. This is a great opportunity for me, and I really don't want to miss it. I guess I shouldn't be nervous.......silly me.

Yup, every place has to have some sensitivity. For example, in my city (in India), it's sad to see majority people express shameless resentment towards African people, and some of them are well educated and belong to the higher strata of the society. They come up with ridiculous statements which I'd better not state here, although they don't have the guts to act it all out in broad daylight.

Funny thing, these are the very same people who will rant and rage about how Indians are discriminated against because of their skin color. Ironic imbeciles........that's what I call them.

I think you will get people who will be racist whatever country you are in, it's the sad truth, but there isn't much we can do a bout it.
