My brother thinking about joining the Marines

Okay, I got another question for ya...

My brother talked to the recruiter about getting more in the contract about what he wants to do (MOS training in aviation electronics or mechanics). The recruiter acted like this was news to him and said they can just put in that my brother wants to get trained in this area – with a code.

Goose, is this what you were talking about on making sure he gets his MOS of choice? Or is he going to have to play the "well the Air Force is going to do this for me" card?

Also, my Dad has been going to a few of these recruiter meetings with my brother and they said it sounds like the actual signing of the contract has to happen away from the parents... I guess this is a standard procedure? (I think my dad is hoping to get a chance to review the contract before my brother signs it.)

Thanks for all your help!

Yeah the MOS is the actual job he will have. If he wants Avionics it'll be 63xx or 64xx depending on what exact part of the aircraft hey gets. Aircraft maintenence should be 60xx, 61xx, and 62xx. I have a friend who was in one of these MOSs, I'll send him an email and see if he knows which ones are the better of these. The MOS for Close Combat Instructor is 8551. These should still be current, but I am not 100% sure. The recruiter will just add this to the contract and your brother will be good. He won't be able to get the 8551 from the recruiter, as far as I know, that should be an option later.

I have no idea why your father wouldn't be allowed there for the signing of the contract. Even if he signs it though and is not satisfied or doesn't understand if the recruiter is being upfront about everythinghe can talk to someone. He could go to the MEPS station and talk to the Marine Liasion there. They should be senior to the recruiter and not worried about making numbers. They are usually pretty interested and want to ensure there is no lying going.

I'll see if I can't get an answer for you soon.

Not sure of the setup there, but if all the recruiters are in the same building, they all hang out together. So if the AF recruiter is there, and he pulls that, the Marine recruiter will probably check on it.

Edited to add:

My parents were with me when I signed for the Air Force, granted that was almost 20 years ago, but they both were there, and both looked it over.

I would have your brother ask directly about that, and if they pull "its policy" have them show him exactly where.

This is the response from a friend of mine who worked in the airwing doing maintence and electronics. He is now a civilian contracted to the Department of Defense working on the new JSF. The contact info I blanked so it wasn't accessable by the free world. I PMed you what you need if you want to direct your brother there for real good clarification on day to day activities, how promotions go, how the fields are, and the differences between them.

It basically depends on what this guy wants to do. If he loves electronics and wants the best possible route for getting work outside of the airfield area once out of the Corps, then I suggest 5953 -5954 Radar or Comms on the ground side. If he is more mechanically inclined then his best bet is to be a crew chief Mech or Tech for fixed wing aircraft. The reason I specifically say fixed wing is that the ch-47+ series rotary wing aircraft are a dime a dozen and the market is saturated with this type of mechanic. Basically he needs an MOS that has the fewest troops in it for the best chance in the civillian world. If He wants, he can call a 59++ shop directly at xxx-xxx-xxxx. These boys work directly for the presidential HMX-1 MCAF squadron on all the airfield operations equipment in Quantico. Have him ask for XXXXXX, he runs the shop down there as a civillian (use to be my roomate), he can direct any question to any of the troops in the shop.

Just wanted to thank everyone who gave me info to pass on to my brother. He was one of four sworn in on Wednesday, July 5th, 2006 in downtown St. Louis.

He'll be heading to bootcamp in California for (at least) 13 weeks, then a little leave time, then to Pensicola, Florida for Air Wing training.

Thanks again!

its longer then 9 weeks, its more like 12.. The 1st 2 will seem longer then 10 years.

its the best branch of service for too many reasons I care to write.

He'll 99.99999% be successful IF he completes the training and his tour.
(there is a saying, "you never meet an unsuccessful marine")

Make sure he has lived a life so far, too few things done will leave him with regrets.

dont take for granted the FREEDOM HE HAS RIGHT NOW! He will never be as free again nor look at life, the general public, politics, religion, or other countries the same way.

go get BAKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sign up after you can pass a piss test and always be proud of what your about to do... Cuz you will always be proud of who you are and what you've done.

Hey, Let him have a big congradulations from me. I really hope everything goes great for him and he gets too do all the stuff he wants to. It was a pleasure helping out a fellow Marine. Let him know that he doesn't have the title yet, but he has made the first step in earning it. Boot camp is waht you make of it. Expect them to be mean and nasty watch Full Metal Jacket and expect the worst. It is mostly head games and anyone who knows that and is ready for it will be fine. It is only about 20% physical and 180% mental. I know he will do well. Anyone looking into it the way him and yourself have will be just fine.

Give your brother a big HOORAH from me! He'll understand... :) Like I said earlier, once a Marine, always a Marine.
