that guy poses a great question... why do cell phones cause problems when a lighting bolt can hit the plane and do nothing?

WOW that would be awesome to be looking out the window at that time!

BTW, modern airplanes aren't affected by cell phones but the airlines don't let you use your cell 'just in case' (actually its because they like to charge $5/min to use their in flight phones). I believe there was a mythbusters episode about a cell taking down a plane.

There was and i saw it. I have a lot of family members that are pilots or are in the airline industry and that is the very reason they dont allow phones. They dont pose any danger to planes. LOL

you could try but there may be a few problems...first and foremost, a airplane IS a rudimentary Faraday Cage so it might keep you from making a call anyway. Second, at cruising altitude, which for modern aircraft is quite high (~6.6mi for a Boeing 747), the "call zones" where you have good reception would be quite small and at the speeds of an airplane (~570mph for 747) would go by quite quickly; though the signal would surely make it out the windows during takeoff and landing. Third, they may have a cell signal detector that lets them know when a cell phone is turned on; I wouldn't put it past them anyway ](*,) .

I've been in a plane that has been hit by lighting and it was interesting... the light from it was amazing... It was different colors... anything but white... When we landed I got off the plane and looked back at it through the windows on the concourse... I was amazed to see a chunk missing in the noise cone of the plane... we flew from San Fransisco to St. Louis with a hole in the front...

wow thats nuts, i remember when i was 12, my family and i went to china and south korea, and on the flight from CA to Seoul there was a large storm, and i believe we were at a high enough altitude to pass over it, sorta like what you'd think would be in someone's brain with all the grey clouds and zips of lightning
